What kind of fuel economy are people getting?

On my 1100, with ccp in, I was getting about 40 whilst 'making progress'.

Without ccp, I'm now down to about 30-35 whilst 'making progress'.

Not sure about around town yet ...

Seems like you've made it worse:Aurelius

Leave your CCP in as this sets a lower level of CO at tickover/low revs and you should have a CO potentiometer for fine tuning. You should be able to get 45 as an average without too much trouble even if you are getting on with it and/or loaded. If you go on a decent ride and swing through an A or B road for a couple of hundred miles at 50-70ish you could expect 50+.

Obviously if you have come off sports bikes or similar you will cane it a bit more and might just need to get used ot the midrange advantage of 11's. If you are "making progress" at 90+ for extended periods then you will use more fuel as GS's are working best around the midrange of revs. And it's a bit of a breeze block of a bike:D

You might even have an aftermarket chip or similar and these can make a difference. Give an idea of a set up.... exhaust, air filter etc and we can tell more.

PS I know you need ot brim the ADV tank to get the fuel consuption accurately but if you fill it up every time the bike will be heavier and your wallet lighter...:D

In winter consumption can be worse as the bike doesn't warm properly for quite a trip.

PPS If its an 11 the "Steptoes Link" doesn't apply. Its an 1150 thing...

FUel map plug... that is often removed to use the 'Steptoe link' or whatever it is called. ?

Ah... thanks Dana, I removed mine when I took the cat off years ago, I get about 45ish.

Oh yeah, what happened to that Jerky you were bringing up :drool :thumb

Thanks Wrigsby.

By removing the ccp, I vastly improved the low revs jerkiness. How do I improve it with the CO pot?

Cheers

Yep, slow speed jerkiness was a issue on quite a few 11's. Removing CCP was a quick get around but you will find the revs "hanging" around 1500 on the way down to tickover. It is set to run a bit weak for emissions and as it was before BM fitted Lambda's to 11/1150's for the UK. If it is a UK bike it will be without a Lambda.

As the FI is a bit slower on the 11's the 1750ish revs or below on/off throttle response has to be set up accurately to minimise and jerkiness. This includes the basic balancing of the Throttle Bodies (TB's) and also checking the mV of the TPS I also cleaned out my TB's which are fairly simple set ups which helped. There are guides on the forum and if you feel mechanically OK and fancy this basic servicing then have a search. If you can't find I will forward some links.

Also there is also checking valve clearances and "end float" or the rocker arms but this is basic servicing outside of the above.

With a good accurate run through the basics there should be a difference but give us an idea of the bike..... Mileage, exhaust, air filter, recent service hist etc:thumb

Oh and is it a UK bike....?

I believe it all got eaten at Verns get-together this past summer... you mean he didn't save you any? It was only 40 hours old as well.. straight from the deer taken from the back garden in Canada! I'll get some more this summer and post you some! :beerjug:

He never saves me anything, I knew I should have gone:D I had to buy some from Tesco's the other day, not a patch on yours :thumb

Sorry darrenptalbot for the thread highjack :thumb2

The bike is a uk model, 1999. FSH, 45000 miles. I've only had it since December and have put about 3k on it. It had only done 3k over the last 2 years, according to mots and service records. Needs drive oil etc changing, but generally ok apart from around town, and that's the problem as I use it for commuting into Bristol.

Rough running

Give it a good blast to london area and take it to Steppers all your probs will be over and it will go better on the way back!

Not sure about any tweaks, apart from cosmetics - adv tank etc.

How do I tell if exhaust is standard?

Standard exhaust pic. Like nuclear waste....half life of 1000 years, you can't give em away and they are piling up everywhere....

Sounds like you need to give the bike a big service... Service kit form Motorworks or similar and a run through thie things above. OR take it to someone like Steptoe who knows how to get them to run as good as possible. This may not be the same thing as a "dealer" service which in many cases is a straight run through the schedule for probably more money.

At 45k it is just run in but some of the fine tuning may have gone out... if it was ever in. Stuff like free throttle cables, clean TB internals (they can carbon up) and TPS voltage etc.

You can get them to be very tractable and well behaved at almost any speed but 'cos they are big twins all the bits have to be working in harmony....:D

Yep, that looks about right for the exhaust! Sodding huge thing, with a pretend cat in the middle!

I'll look at service kit. Is a clymer the best manual?

CO pot adjusts mixture at tickover. Screw in to weaken and out to richen. Small adjustments only. To do it properly you need an exhaust gas analyser, though personally I don't bother; I just adjust to either weaken or richen as needed.

By the way, neither of my UK spec 1100/850 oilheads has ever had a ccp (cat code plug) fitted. It is my understanding that only bikes with a cats (and a lambda sensor) had a code plug fitted.
