Fuel gauge gone again to day, 2010 GSA

2010 GSA

I'm not getting the warning light on unexpectedly, but...

My fuel gauge /range displays have been consistent if not exactly accurate since I had the bike and I was fine with that.

But now it's all over the shop: as I'm riding the gauge and calculated range seems to "stick" for ages at a point and then plummet quickly and it's also now started sticking when fill up.

Bike was reading 120 miles for ages, which was impossible unless some good samaritan had filled the tank for me, so I fill up and ride the 8 miles home to find it's now reading 160!

Get up in the morning and it's still not reading full and telling me the range is 220 then over the course of 40 mile journey to work it goes up to over 370 and is reading full!

Another 80 miles (home and back to work) and it's showing ony one bar down.

Mine does exactly the same, all over the shop. The fuel gauge is NOT to be trusted, just use your trip or satnav to be on the safe side... bummer I know

Well, for a moment I thought the fuel gauge was behaving itself again and had gone back to it's previous (quite consistent) behaviour.

It counted all the way down to the last bar on the gauge and an estimated range of 60-odd miles and then as I was looking for a petrol station it jumped up to 3 bars and an estimated range of 190-odd miles.

It then took over 30 litres of fuel to refill, but this time at least it did quite quickly show full on the gauge and the range recalculated to 400.

My fuel gauge yesterday showed 2/3 bars traveled 70miles stayed over night and left the next day I traveled 80miles home (hot sunny day) the gauge is now showing full up with 400+ miles to go on my trip..!! today I added 5lt in my garage and the gauge still shows full, put in 11lt at Tesco's and still full with 400+ miles to go until I need to add fuel, this is my 3rd GS and never had this problem....:confused::confused::confused::confused:

Fuel or no fuel, that is the question !

I have a 2008 adv with 18k on the clock. Mine went two months out of warranty, but got the extended warranty so CW's fixed it. I put two tanks of fuel in it and it went again, showing just two bars down. Had another one fitted and filled up once since so fingers crossed. Usually use the trip meter myself so I know when to fill up, but I like things working properly if they are on the bike. I have never had a car fuel gauge fail on me, so why should a bike ? Perhaps we should have anothe sticky on the site like the final drive going west. I love the bike, but want it to work properly. Gripe over.:blagblah

2010 GSA :(

"I don't care to belong to a club that accepts people like me as members." but I'm 'fraid I no longer have the choice. Pah!

Having moved over from Mr Honda, if I get through my ownership with just a fuel guage problem, I'll be relatively happy. Great to ride but I am very nervous about the build quality of this thing, it just doesnt scrub up like my rice burners.

Couldn't agree more...my GSA wont be running like a swiss clock when its 30 years old like my Honda CX 500 B now sold :tears..
Over the 18 moths it never let me down started in freezing conditions, fuel gauge was very accurate reaching to turn the tap to reserve at motorway speeds ...
final drive untouched at 35000 Mls.

I do feel lucky my 09 GSA has had minimal problems with 2 flat battery, left heated grip, front suspension oil leak ESA, all in the first year.
Things seem to be ok now but for how long:nenau...

Seems every afternoon at BMW factory is friday...

Is it only UK bikes that are affected?

I hear some stories of what happens to the Mini's destined for Germany as they sail down the Cowley production lines.

Hi i think mines broke aswell. 2009 Gs1200se, 14k -Yellow warning light, FUEL flashing and no fuel blocks showing, even with a full tank. I stripped the bike down to inspect the fuel level sensor. I have never seen anything like it before. Looks like a plastic tape covered electrode, which can be slid out of its plastic cover and at the top of it, is what looks like a micro chip. There are no obvious signs of damage or faults and I put an electrical tester accross all the terminal connections but had no resistance at all (Sensor not submerged in liquid). What actually happens to them to stop them from working?

My - new to me - 58 plate GS joined the club this morning while in the darkest depths of the wild, wet and windy Yorkshire Dales. It was a bit disconcerting!

And that's after the FPC failure just 3 days ago. What is with these bikes?!

get a petition going and send it to BuMW once we get as many signatures as possible, makes you wonder how many people have fallen foul of this problem.

I only found the UKGSER forum looking for fuel gauge problems, so I didn't even know there was an active community sharing info :blagblah

Anyway at least you now know :blast

It says this in the handbook somewhere that when you fill up you have to put enough fuel in (can't remember what this was) in order for the fuel guage to respond/read accurately.

:rob:rob:rob

I've just started reading this thread, so my observation could be out of date!

According to the Rider's Manual, page 85:-

'When refuelling after running on reserve, make sure that you top up the tank to a level above the reserve, as otherwise the sensor will not be able to register the new level. If the sensor cannot register the new level neither the fuel level reading nor the range readout can be updated'

This means that the unit is faulty if you put in £15 worth and it does not register.

I contacted my dealer (who I have great respect for) recently and was told that it was an issue BMW were aware of, but there was no point in replacing the sender as the problem would probably persist. My name would be recorded on their data base as having complained about the problem and I would be contacted for a fix when and if BMW solved the problem.

I feel a telephone conversation with BMW coming shortly!:blagblah

Mine too :mad::mad::mad:

It's a 2004 model with 95k kms on the colock. After refuelling in Asliah (Morocco) last week, it took more than 10 miles to get the triangle to switch off and the gauge to mark full. When at Customs stop it was marking ok, but at the moment of restarting, with less that 80 kms done since full refuel, triangle went on again and gauge marked nearly empty tank.

May it be the type of pertol used in Morocco? May it be that it was time te get broken?

Is it a DIY repair or once changed, we must visit the BMW computer plug?

There ain't no fix, you just have to live with it. I'm on my second sender and third time in for adjustment. I've now given up but it's a pain to live with.

Sad to know! Mine never marked very well, since the first days, as triangle used to switch on when tankl was half full, but I never had such a a think as now.

Is the sender on the pump side?

dreadful reading!

Jeez, I am not a BMW basher (rymes with `rasher` - only joking mate :D) indeed I love the bikes but this thread is very deeply concerning.

i`ve had 2 `go` myself - all replaced on warranty I hasten to add!

But nonetheless, even for us not unreasonable guys it makes for grim reading - wish i had kepyt my old CX500 slug!

otherwise and to end on a positive note I am very pleased to say that not much else has gone wrong, done 6k and still on my original FD - woohoo :JB

Mines been faulty for about 3 years and the reading seems to have drifted a little more just recently. I’m waiting for Hexcode to make the GS-911 be able to do fuel gauge calibration then I may replace the sensor myself (and I might not bother, because it'll only go again unless they re design it).

I had the same problem with my 08 GSA yellow warning triangle light up :( and all the bars on the fuel guage disappeared :blast ... The problem is the dealers try and recalibrate the existing fuel sensor sometimes it works and off you go again for it to fail a few days latter. Insist it gets replaced and should solve the problem. :beerjug:

+1 to that , charged me £95 for the part alone (new fuel sensor) on my previous 2008 GS , mileage was 11,000 before it went.:flag
