My bars don't work properly! I can fill the bike to overflowing and the black bars will go all the way to the top if I leave the ignition on while filling. Then turn the ignition off to go and pay....come back and it only goes to 3/4 full.:blast

I have tried leaning it over to the right while half full to "clear" the float...still hasn't altered the situation. What I can't understand is the gauge is obviously working, because it lights up the screen while filling. I just can't work out why it is dropping back down again when the ign is turned off and doesn't return to the top when it is turned on again immediately afterwards.

At the other end of the scale, the bars disappear long before the light comes on (but it does still come on). I have had the bike a while and known how far I can get away with before fuelling, but even so, it is nice for things to work as they are meant to.

Any ideas?

Oh - Also, anyone know where I can find the instructions on drilling the filler cap neck please? I know of the mod, but even after 6 years, I still haven't done it! No excuse other than laziness and muppetry.

Just drill one or two 6mm holes half way up the neck.:thumb

Perhaps someones nicking your fuel when you go to pay for it:aidan

When it's full it's full right? Does it give a accurate low fuel warning?

To be honest there are worse things that could happen to you. Maybe just live with it.

...

Why is the bike ignition live when filling?
The gs' certainly have personalities though don't they?! Mines always a bit contrary.

The low fuel warning light and the bars on the gauge have separate pick-ups.

The upper one in this photo is the main gauge and the lower one is for the warning light.

The black lines are crap that eventually gets deposited on the contacts. Next time you do a fuel filter change, give the contacts a clean.

What's that drilling business all about then?
Tibs
The design of the filler-neck means that it's impossible to use all of the tank's actual capacity.

The design is to allow room for expansion before it pisses out via the over-flow tube.

If you want to make use of the extra litre or two capacity, drill a hole in the neck so that the air is forced out.

I've drilled two and have managed to squeeze 33 litres into the tank but it's not worth filling to that level unless you are going to immediately ride far enough to consume the extra because engine heat alone will cause the fuel you've just paid for to leave a large puddle under the bike.

If drilling the filler neck, be aware that the water drain coils around the outside of the filler neck inside the tank (you can't see it by looking done the filler cap). Make sure you remove the filer cap and pull the neck up out of the tank so you can see where you're drilling.

I reckon every time I brim the 1100 I throw away 50p:blast

You profligate lackey of the consumer society.

I'm more concerned about someone throwing away a lighted match near my bike.

Ha, I also push my bike a way from the pool of petrol before starting it!

Your problem may also be linked to a dodgy connection. Squirt of WD40 or silicon spray on the 4 pin connector block under the black plastic cover below the tank on the right hand side.

Common problem...easily fixed.

Shuck - I'll try it, thanks - could be because of course it was undone last time I did the fuel filter (last service...about coincides):eek. So that same muppetry that applies to the faster filling thing...could easily apply to the fuel gauge shinaninigans.

Because I turned the key to see if the bars went up as I filled it.....they did! they went back down again when I went in to pay for it.:friday

This could be done at the same time as I clean the connector block terminals....you have just doubled my workload! I need an extra beer to prepare me for the weekend's onslaught of forced labour. :jager
