I have a new to me old 1150RT (2004). I'm trying to get it to state that I can trust it for long journeys. It needs a lot of work but, it was cheap and I'm happy to tinker with it and work through the issues systematically. The next thing is the clutch which I think is shagged and if not, I'd prefer to have a fresh plate in for peace of mind. While the tank is off, I'd like to address the fuel gauge which isn't working. From the images of the gauge sensor, there's a wire hanging off the bottom of the tube, where does this wire connect? I'm guessing here but, does it pass across the tank bottom and connect to the pump assembly on the left side of the tank? My plan is to remove it, clean it and see whether it's that causing the fault or the instrument display.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

I’m not quite clear what you mean ..
But beware of any advice, as the RT fuel tank gauge internals are different to the GS fuel gauge float set up.

Hi Steptoe, I believe the fuel level sensor is a long tube that goes into the tank at the top of the right hand side. The float attached to the pump assembly float, located inside the lower right of the tank is for the low fuel light. Correct me if I'm wrong but, the fuel level sensor is a tube containing a float inside it that moves up and down sending a signal to the gauge that has bars showing how much fuel is in the tank. According to the diagrams I've seen the tube holding the float has a wire protruding from the bottom, I'm assuming this is to transmit the fuel level to the gauge. My question is, where does that wire and it's connector go to? See attached images

It goes to the pump/tank main plug .. ..
the GS has a float arm, a float attached to a thin metal rod, like a ballcock
