Fuel guage failure again

The first time the fuel guage went tits up, it (the sender, i think) was replaced under warranty.

It's out of warranty and the fuel guage is now playing up again - the milage constantly reads zero and the yellow fuel light is permanently on.

Now i appreciate that you should guage fuel on mileage, which i do, but i still want to fix the issue - the yellow fuel light is distracting.

I've got no issues removing the tank, but if i was to personally carry out the job, where do i go from there? is it a big job? what part/s do i need to order.

Bike is a '07 R1200GS with computer.

Any advice, even 'its too big a job, just take it to a garage' is very much appreciated.

Just heard,

1. fitting the sender is not a big job, just a little fiddly - but needs to be programmed after fitting.

Turning the fuel light off - can not be done. - otherwise i would have gone down this road.

Off to the dealers next week then.

I hope this has helped anyone searching about this problem

Apparently BMW dealers, well some of them anyway are repairing fuel gauge defects under warranty even though the warranty may have expired as there is clearly a huge design fault.
Not sure if a duff sender would qualify but no harm in trying.
If you don't ask you don't get...

It's worth checking the connector on top of the plug that goes to the sender - I had exactly the same problem on my GSA and it turned out there was water in the top of the connector which was fusing the canbus.

Anyone know what the operating principle of the sender is. It shows as a variable resistance on the wiring diagram I have but I have a feeling it may be capacitance.
Whatever it is, it shouldn't be too difficult to come up with a 'dummy' that you could plug-in in place of the sender to make the gauge show (say) 50%.

Would get rid of the yellow light anyway.

Too right. Also don't forget it's their warranty and doesn't affect your statutory rights.
