It's finally happened; Fuel guage failure

My bike has done 14500 (2.5yrs old) from new and my gauge has just gone same way! Started off my journey with 3/4 tank showing, then within a few minutes yellow warning light and no fuel gauge! It's in being repaired now - hope the extended BMW warranty covers it?

Who agrees with me that although faults can accur on any bike, I get the feeling these bikes are not build to last at all! Bet this won't be cheap to fix? Love the bike, unhappy with low mileage reliability!

My replacement broke within 2 days. Had another fitted on Wednesday and still working :thumb

:blast Finally feel part of the group. 26 miles left in the tank, to tight to get fuel on the M6 and the bike cuts out !! LOL.

After a discussion with the wife on if it’s legal if I could push the bike back the 100 meters to the service station??, SHE set of to buy a Gerry Can of fuel (yes shivery is dead).

Phoned BMW breakdown to log it and we will see what the dealers say on Monday

Had a simular problem last week, half tank full to quarter tank, then yellow warning and the miles dropped in as many feet, until i ground to a halt :eek
Lucky for me North London Cookie carries a 2Ltr fuel can :D so up and running, had it checked at Southport yesterday and a new fuel bar fitted, the old one had gone rusty  I did think it a little strange as they asked did I keep the bike out side :nenau

but good job form them and all's well now :thumb2

Mine does the opposite !!

Mine shows a full tank all the time ! just done 12000 miles and out of BMW warranty but have a Warranty Direct policy so i hope this covers it !

Had to have mine replaced recently by BMW Alton and even though I have the BMW warranty I was charged the £100 excess.

I referred my dealer to The Sale of Goods Act as amended by The Sale and Supply of Good to Consumers Regulations 2002. The basis for my claim was that the motorcycle was not fit for purpose in that the fault was due to an inherent or manufacturing defect. It was not due to anything I had done or due to fair wear and tear. The dealer agreed to pay the excess.

mmmmmm

I`m on my third fuel gauge thingy in 6000 miles on my 2010 R1200GSA - the dealer was somewhat tight lipped but apprently there is a problem witht he strip (? :nenau) coming detached...............

BTW fantastic dealer - they just keep replacing them and giving me good bikes to ride on - last one was the new 1600GT

I can`t believe they are having quality problems................ :D

Now I really feel part of the team, I had been hoping for a FPC failure, but alas that was pre-empted under recall, coils - no, final drive - no, ring antenna -no. Today I got my first fuel sender failure. I feel so proud.

There I had a 1/3rd of a tank, next it says empty with miles dropping like my pension fund. Now reads zero and topping the tank to full hasn't helped.

I'm going to give it afew runs before jumping to conclusions, but I am suspecting a fuel level sender failure. Perhaps paying for the out of warranty, warranty will help.

:D

One thing to check on the GSA models at least is the multipin connector on the FPC. I had a non-working Fuel guage and when I hooked up the GS911 it was showing that the FPC connector had "fused". In checking the connector I noticed that one of the holding lugs was loose and when I took it out I could see water in the upper part where the connectors go into the block. Dried it out, refitted and hey presto a fully functional guage again.

Beemerman59, I will check that out, it sounds plausible. I even own a GS911 if I can find where I left it last (now I wonder if they got around to doing an iPhone app for it). Is the connector you mention the visible connector you see going into the top of the FPC area? All I know is it is perfect for water collection, but have never looked real close at is not the easiest thing to access.

And cheers :beerjug:

Yes, that's the one. Easier to access if you just take off the black plastic trim on the L/H side of the tank cover. There are two connectors, the more central one is the FPC and the one closer to the edge is the fuel guage sender. There are two clips on either side which need to be undone and if you then lift off the top of the connector, the top of the pins are exposed and you can spray some WD40 into them if you wish.

Will do, and thanks again.

Hi Beemerman59.

Unfortunately not as simple as water in the connector. The suggestion about removing the black panel was spot on, made the job of checking it all out, very much simpler.

A scan with the GS911 shows an ongoing fault, so it looks like a replacement fuel level sensor is in order.

Thanks again.

If that be an M3 in your avatar, presumably you're pretty well acquainted with the fuel monster.. :P
