Fuel guage strip broken again!!

That's alright but it doesn't help those of us with older Bikes who ought to be able to expect a Product with a Working Life in excess of 1-2 years.
Likelihood is that this wouldn't happen in the Car World.
For Example, my Daughter has a 12 year old Kia which (along with many, many others of its genre) manifested a Fault with the Lining of the Fuel Tank at around 10 years old and the Company graciously replaced the Tanks completely FOC.
That's Customer Service as it should be.
BMW is a supposedly better quality Product than the likes of Kia.
But then perhaps BMW feel that, because of their Market Standing, they can ride Rough Shod over their Paying Customers without fear of Consequence?

thats very true, this not only a bmw thing tho, look at the vauxhall three cylinder timing chain issues .and many others i suppose .i have had three r1200gs,and the 2005 gs1200 was utter shite.bearings, oil seals, abs, fuel strips, switch gear etc its shocking and yes they all went wrong with mine, thank god i bought it from a dealer and was sorted under the one year parts and labour that came with the bike.and really if you look thats probs why the 1150 gs,bring more money than a 1200 ,because they were a better bike.
i am sure its all a cost cutting exercise i suppose ,how can we make this component as cheep as possible until its out of its warranty ,thenits somebody else,s problem .

BMW wasted a load of money scraping final drives that chucked oil out of the breather and engines with flaking paint.

They also missed a trick with shock absorbers. Many failed under 30k so were replaced on warranty. Had the fitted rebuildable units they could have charged for rebuilds every 15K.

The fuel strip is cheap (to them) so no incentive to solve the problem. Anyway the warranty budget got busted by the other stuff.

So, I took my bike into the dealer for a service and have the fuel guage fixed.

I had a nice surprise when I went to collect the bike - they didn't charge me for the fuel guage repair!

Thank you BMW.

a nice surprise, did they replace the strip or just do a re calibrate ,also it may have been done within the last two years from a previous owner ,in that case the dealer would just recoup the money back from bmw .

So, having had it repaired on 16th December, it failed again today. Phoned the garage and they will fix it free of charge.

Join the club, ask how long they are giving a warranty on the replacement one, at least you will know when you next have to buy one,
I've got until August i think left on my 2 year warranty,
so far on my third in 17 months.

I'm thinking about a job located not far from my local BMW bike dealer so should be fine for getting the warranty stuff done. All I'll need is a folding push bike to get me from the shop to work and back.

But I live about an hour away so its really not convenient pop down and get it fixed. I sorted out my own sliding float fuel gauge which has worked well for 6 months. I must get around to fiddling with resistors to see exactly what signals the OEM instruments use.

The sliding float reads 100% for the first 100 miles, but goes right down to zero when I've got about 1 litre remaining. It came in handy this week when I'd had the instruments off the bike and reset the trips to zero.

If Bendy toy made an after market product for this problem he would be onto a nice little earner. My strip failed on Thursday ( 2011 r1200r ) it will be third one for the bike. So Thursday coming I get a new free ( warranty ) one.
Their warranty policy is absurd. Engine/final drives replaced with paint defects cost £k ? Fuel strip cost £200 ish
