1200 ADV 2006. Had the tank off to wire in new lights and had about 1/3 of a tank in. Obviously the fuel has slashed around a bit.

Before I went to fill up with petrol the gauge was a bit random, but on filling to the brim I got a full reading, then then when riding for about 20 minutes I would go from full to fuel warning light being on and range being about 230 miles to two bars showing.

It eventually settled to 2 bars showing whilst I was out, but now shows 4 (half full) occasionally when I know there is about 200 miles in and should read full.

Tank normally indicates full for 130 miles, then goes to half way for about 10 miles then shows 2 bars for the next 100, then 1 then reserve. It's always been crap but I know what it does inside out. This is different.

Do I need to do a reset with a GS911 or do anything else? The gauge was fine before I took the tank off. Everything else is normal.

What's the collective wisdom?

Most likely, the fuel strip is failing. Try the zapping technique. Its safe because the spark can't get outside of the mylar strip. All explained below.

Failing that, ignore the fuel level indicator and get one of these. It fits into the RHS adventure side case frame, needing just a bracket and strap and will fit with a side case fitted. Some say that with a 34 litre tank you'll never run out. I've run out twice since my fuel strip failed. With a big tank you forget to check the miles until its too late.

There is a simple circuit using 2 resistors that fools the gauge into reading half a tank, The main reason to do this is to get rid of the warning light.
Then use the trip.
As stated "zapping" is first option and often works.

I use the trip but the annoying tendency for it to return to total miles has caught me out a couple of times.

Google "R1200GS fuel gauge spoofing" should find the resistor fix.

My fuel strip packed in a few years ago so I just use the trip and so far haven't run out.

Tried the zapping but it didn't work so I made up the resistor bodge but realised that to fit it I needed to cut the wires to the fuel strip connector which makes it tricky to reinstate the fuel strip if I decide to do it before selling the bike.

Has anyone found a 'socket' that fits the fuel strip plug? That would allow me to wire the bodge to the socket and simply plug it in.

Cheers

I have a home made zapper you are welcome to borrow. PM me if interested.
