Does anyone know why my fuel light would come on after 3 or 4 miles, even when the tanks full? It seems to reset when switched off, then does it again down the road. 2000 1150 GS, cheers.

It sounds like your fuel level damping module is playing up. Assuming everything else with you tank gauging is working OK, then it seems the most likely component, especially as it takes a while for it to react.

Item 9 in your fuse box.

Thanks Ian, having trouble finding a new relay, where would have one, cheers.

The part No is 61352306365

Do a google search. Motorworks sell used items at £9 if they are available.
Bought one, and replaced. After initially thinking it had done the trick, problem is back again! Any thing else I can try? It’s annoying as much as anything.

Have you tried cleaning the block connector under the right hand side plastic cover on the o/s of the bike?. When it gets corroded it can play havoc with your fuel reading. When you fill up and your level shows anything but full!! Not sure about the fuel light but maybe worth a look. Bit of fine sand paper normal sorts it.

Tried all the connections, it’s the same every time. Fuel gauge works fine, just the light comes on for no reason.

The purpose of the fuel damping relay is to control the low fuel light. It does this by monitoring the low fuel switch which is located on the fuel gauge in the fuel tank. Only when the low fuel switch has been operated for a set period of time does the module operate the low fuel light.

If you remove the fuel damping relay, then you should not get a low fuel light, but you should still have a fuel gauge.

So if with the fuel damping relay removed you still get a low fuel light, then it’s likely you have a wiring fault in the instrument wiring loom.
