I was putting the fuel tank back in place today having had it moved back to replace fork seals which all went well thanks to Steptoes pictures in the font of all wisdom.
However unknown to me while moving the tank forward I snagged it on the fuel line and snapped the inline one way fuel valve:blast.

I oredered the new part but it won't be in til wednesday so as a temporary measure I fitted an inline fuel valve that I picked up at a local motor factors.

The engine ran for a while and then stopped so I figured that the valve was not working or there was no petrol left in the tank as I drained most of it earlier after breaking the valve so I topped up the tank but while doing so petrol started pouring from one of the breather pipes almost as quickly as I was pouring it into the tank.

I have now resorted myself to waiting for the correct valve to come into my local dealer on wednesday in order to get the bike back on the road but can anyone explain why petrol would be pouring from the breather hose?

The only time this ever happens usually is when the tank is full and on the side stand so confused.:nenau

No. It was the first thing I checked but then realised that if it was off at the tank it would not be coming out at the bottom of the pipe.

No, it's come of INSIDE the tank! I know cos I done it.

Please don't tell me that. I traced the pipe from the bottom up and it was just cliped onto the outside of the pump.

If it is the case that the pipe is off on the inside, how the hell do you get to that?

Both of the smaller pipes inside the tank run from the filler cap to the round fuel pump plate, as your original mishap was at the plate end I might suggest you remove that and have a look first, the big O ring will have grown and will not fit until some of the petrol has evaporated off it, I sit mine on top of a hot kettle for an hour :thumb2

Will have a look at that, Stewart, Thanks

Fuel pipe

Get yourself a manual and all will be come clear also make life much easier.

I am still awaiting for the valve to come into my dealer but went to remove the other 1 way valve that I put on yesterday and noticed that some fuel was getting through. I tried to start the bike but no joy. However each time I tried to start I could hear the fuel pump priming in a very peculiar whine.
Is it possible that the fuel pump needs to be bled in any way as it was working perfectly for a while yesterday until I had to drain the tank?

Pump doesn't need priming, but you do need both hoses ( inlet and outlet ) to be attached to the tank and allowing fuel both out and back into the tank.

If you've only one hose fitted the pump is straining trying to pump.

Thanks for that, Neil

I fitted the new inline fuel valve tonight but bike still won't start. I checked the plugs and both are sparking but cylinders do seem dry.
The petrol is going through the valve that I fitted, which is the correct way around, (one in to tank and one away from tank) but does seem as if no petrol making it to the carb.

So any idea as to what to check in between each of these points??

Thanks in advance

Rob

Are you absolutely certain that you have not connected the opposite pipes (I have before:blast) and you describe the quick disconnects as one way valves, mine have valves in them but they only shut off when disconnected, they will flow in either direction when connected, will yours ? and what pipe did you find had fallen off ?

100% sure that pipes and valves are correct as only 1 valve broke so was only at 1 valve and pipe. Other one has not been touched.
I did initially describe it as a one way valve as that was what I told it was but have since realised that it is not 1 way so yes they do flow in either direction.
I did not find any pipe off anywhere, it was just suggested on here that the breather may have come off inside the tank because when I was refilling the tank having drained it the fuel was flowing quite quickly out of the breather pipe.

Sorted:JB
No petrol in the Carbs so one of 2 things worked.

1. Blew and sucked on the pipe just below the inline valve which I replaced.

2. Put a smidge of petrol in the cylinder head.

So tried it and it started first time so whichever one worked I don't know but who cares its working. Happy days:D
