Fuel protests

Governments are nearly always in debt so they never profit from tax rises, they reduce the country's debt.
It’s not a tax rise, fuel is taxed as a percentage of the cost price, so the tax rate stays the same but the revenue gathered from a higher prices gives the Gov more income.

Maybe more tax does reduce the country’s debt I don’t know🤷‍♂️ but for the average person it is increasing their debt.

As an example from the news stories this morning on the Irish protests; the farmers and hauliers explained; the cost of fuel has stopped them operating at a profit or reduced their profit margin, this means they can’t afford to operate their farm machinery / Lorry’s as it’s not economically viable, but they still have to find the money to cover the loans that the machinery was bought with. This means they are not producing food, or moving goods, crops could spoil, food shortages and price rises follow. Worst case they lose the machinery and go out of business.

In the UK this is probably what the Gov want to happen so they can buy the land at a knock down price and put a solar farm on it. That will get them more votes from the lefties and vegans who don’t actually realise that their vegan diet relies on farmers producing crops.

As far as Gov is concerned green targets are more important than feeding the country and being self reliant on fossil fuels.

A good point my friend - it's a bit ago but an English lass I was getting on OK with had C & A on her knickers.
And being English still managed to get them on back to front

Why is there a fuel problem in Ireland?
There is & there isn't. Trump's Iran adventure pushed up fuel prices globally. A lot of jumping up & down by various interest groups, e.g. hauliers & farmers, resulted in the government cutting the "tax" take temporarily. The political opposition wailed it was enough, opposition does not have to say what might be enough or to promulgate any positive proposal; they whip up discontent. In the unlikely event that fuel was free outrage would still be orchestrated.
The government have & continue to talk to the official vested interest groups. However informal protest groups formed over last weekend via various social media platforms. These ad hoc groups were initially haulage & agricultural operatives - unhappy with established representation - who instituted go slow convoys last Tuesday & caused a degree of disruption. Pleased with themselves they went on the airways demanding lots of things, such as a price cap on diesel & a ministerial meeting.
Each such group had its own "leadership" - for want of a better word - & each spokesperson had a different slant on their demand. Meanwhile the minister(s) did not wish to open back door "negotiations" to the chagrin of the more long established "official" groups.
To a degree the county was getting on with the inconvenience. The police took a softly softly profile, believing things would loose momentum. the original ad hoc groups lost control of their own trajectory & attracted a lot of hanger on types with their own covert agendas - mostly right wing "nationalists", stirred on by such as Tommy Robinson & his Irish equivalents. They were not happy with "go slow" type carry on & instituted refinery & oil depot blockades.
Social media is replete with cheer leaders for the resultant mayhem. Fuel stations are running out of fuel & to quote Captain Boyle (Juno & the Paycock) things are "in a state o' chassis".
I was planning a wee trip on my bike over the weekend but that is on hold because there is no fuel in Ireland but there is fuel in Ireland.
That is my honest "take" others may have a different view.

The stupid fuckwits in government have refused to talk to the organisers of the protests/blockades but are holding talks with the representatives of the various haulage groups who have stated that the situation is nothing to do with them. JJH

The stupid fuckwits ...... JJH
2 Things arise - S FW's are not confined to government circles.
  • There is a tanker of fuel in Galway bay that cant discharge, because the storage tanks are full because S FW's have blockaded the road tankers that would have ensured the fuel in store was delivered & out of the way.
  • This is not France; any future S FW with a grievance will have learned that parking up in the way opens influential doors.

We need to talk. We don’t have the means to force the issue. By refusing to talk to the people involved it’s not helpful. I want to see an end to it. I can’t see any. JJH

The whole of Ireland has been closed down now, all ports apparently closed and the public seem to be onbaord with the protestors, hopefully the UK and Europe will follow, the people need to take back their countries.

To top it all; the Irish have kicked off about the cost of their fuel and on average, it’s actually cheaper there than in the UK; we do nothing but moan and just bend over for another shafting🙄 at least they are making their feelings known.

Cheaper? Not usually. I try to buy kerosene and petrol in the north because it’s substantially cheaper up there. Don’t know about diesel. Or what the current fuel chrisis has done to prices. I believe there’s going to be protests up there on the 14th. JJH

It's kinda funny that the protestors are not blockading the US embassy seeing as how this is where it all started.

They probably don't want to bugger up their chances of a US visa for themselves or their off spring.

I had deliveries of refrigerated cancer medicines cancelled to my pharmacy today as the wholesalers did not to chance it being stuck in traffic and going off.
Sure it's only cancer and they were probably going to die anyways.

Oh dear. They saying that all essential stuff is getting trough. JJH.

Tomorrow is going to be interesting JJH

Glad we drove through Ireland to Belfast on Easter Monday
There was plenty of diesel fuel, albeit at a high price

These road blockages have been happening in a week when the the schools have been closed and a lot of parents have taken time off anyway.

If it continues from Monday that will be a whole different kettle of fish in terms of disruption.

On a happier note, the sun is shining here
this morning after the storm and rain last night,
I have fuel in the tank, will head down to the border have a look and report back.

Bernie's BIL owns an engineering firm that makes agricultural equipment and fuel bowsers etc. I spotted one of their bowsers on the 6.1 news and texted him to let him know he he said in the last week they have sold 20 bowsers mostly to county councils and for emergency services.

It's an ill wind.... :ROFLMAO:

First point correct but who with???? their PRO lad has stated many times he is there in dublin and has nothing to do with all the other groups. So cant talk with 1 group when rest are not part of it. Actually there is no organisation and they originally said they would not work with IFA and IRHA (realy poor name to give a company). Governemnt will talk with recognised bodies.

On Gov side they wont just fall down for a few protestors, they did however screw it up big time with Tuesdays hard line attitude which just escalted the protestors.

What Gov should have done is told IFA and IRHA to allow 2-3 members selected by these groups in under yoru wing and then we can discuss with everyone. However no one knows what they want, some want carbon tax removed (i will 100% agree there) caps on vat, ahh yes/no depends on agrument (take carbon tax off and i think it fixes it all) then some wanted oil wells opened in atlantic, one group wanted roads repaired in their area....?????? it gone out control as they have no clear agenda. Next week lot these lads will be back in school, down my way a lot of the lads standing around were farmers sons who were off this week.

Also as mentioned by the trade unions who were on radio, a blockade isnt a protest its an aillegal action. Protests cant be stationary and block anything off, they have to be moving (hence why when a company unuion goes on strike at a company gate they have to be walking with their signs. standing or siting down isnt a legal protest as it has become an illegal blockade). Asked someone in the know when heard this to confirm and they backed this up.

Plus short minded as next year if EU says know what or grants and aid to farmers may take a reduction they have only themselves to blame. They are out for their own intrests which is every groups right to protest but dont say we have all the country behind us when they dont. Online support isnt actual support.

In my short life time this is second time i am using credit card to help get to work, i had to do it for years in the recession when everyone was hit hard, didnt see farms out protesting for me then.

Whether you agree or dont agree with whats happening is the right for all of us to have differring opinions.

Just as a side note i have lot family in the farming and also farming contractor business so i get to see it from all side.

I like a donegal lad who is part of the protest, he was out challenging the politicans who came out to meet them, he made one very valid point lot the protests forgot, 1st likes them will jump on any protest for self gain, 2nt and most importantly lot them votes in the carbon tax.

I think if they stuck with the go slow plan and not blockade anything they would have lot more support and also lot more leverage as were not doing anything illegal. Once go down route pushing limits of the law you force the hand of the government to enfoce the law whether you agree or not that is the law and its also why we live in a safe cilived society.

I will give lto credit to group here in Foynes, there is only a few Garda required here as the group is working with them to semi blockage but also they are flexible and will let some trucks with fuel and food out. Very smart and guess what it gets your point accross but also doesnt cause an actual full lock in. So credit to them as they have reasoning to work with the authorities from what i seen myself.

As for the medical supplies i can see how companies are worried and haulage, some meds we have get delivered to our house were in trucks and had a short shelf life once not in cold storage. They had about 5 hours from leaving stores (in dublin) until got to our house (and other houses) for us to store them in a cool store thats provide by HSE. (now my dads beer fridge in shed). This lack empathy to the people who need care is shocking by the online community. However i have heard lot people in Limerick say they are now able get in but very slow and causes lot discomfort. I also heard locally some protestors looking for medical proof of emergency not on at all.
