Hi folks,

The other day I noticed my fuel pump whining louder than usual. I only noticed it as I was stopped at a set of lights between 2 trucks and could hear it reverberating off them over the bike engine noise. It seems to be constant now.

The usual chain of events is now...

- start bike
- get the usual fuel pump priming sound
- bike is running, fuel pump is silent
- ride off, pump gently starts whining
- whining then remains constant until I stop the engine

Defo fuel pump as I left the bike running and undid the connection to the fuel pump on the RHS of the bike and when I did the whining stopped.

The bike seems to run fine (though it's only been a few days like this)

Should I stop worrying and just get used to it (like oh so many GS noises!) or is it a sign of impending 'new-fuel-pump-ness'?

Dunno - if it's a regular service item then Steptoe would have done it at it's 30k service ('bout a year ago)

My thoughts exactly.....

PM me with an email address - I have a step by step tossers guide to changing fuel filter if you are interested.

Filter

My 1999 1100 did the same. I changed the fuel filter ( which had been there from new ) and this sorted the whine.:beerjug:

You should have seen the crap that came out of the filter!!

Noise

Change the filter sooner than later putting extra strain on the pump.

If you're following Dr Bones' thread and looking at his pics be ****very careful*** with those fixed threads/nuts when tightening up - they can break off if you put too much pressure on:rolleyes:

Yep, it was a long, delicate act to get them off without breaking them. Once I'd got them all off I cleaned the threads with a nut with a slot cut in the side of it. I replaced the steel nuts with brass ones and spring washers when it all went back together. 6nm is all the torque they need (they are M5)

New fuel filter fitted - easy peasy.

Noise gone.

Job done.

Noise!! AGHHHH!

Flog it quick, as your a fellow tosser bung me £10.00 and I'll take it away!, alternativly change the fuel filter, no reflection on Steppers but you dunno what crap has been picked up in the petrol.

My fuel pump is noisy too so I guess better change the filter - would be interested in your guide Geko!

When I replaced mine I fitted an external car fuel filter in the space that the ABS would have been had my bike had it. Cheaper, easier to get at to replace and bigger than stock. Gained at least 500ml more fuel capacity:D
