I'm trying to get my old 1100S back on the road - it has been sat in the garage unused for a couple of years and I'm having a few problems. I just want to ride it when my GSA is unavailable! The fuel pump is the same as the GS anyway.
Now first thing is - it WAS running a couple of weeks ago. It started up after some messing about - the fuel pump wasn't running initially but I found that if I disconnected and reconnected the sidestand switch a few times it jerked into life and the bike ran. I thought it was just sticky or something after sitting so long. It started ok after that constantly and I ran it just round the block a few times on different occasions just to get some heat back into it. Then it was parked outside running and it just stopped. Turning the ignition on and off it was obvious the fuel pump wasn't 'priming'. Took the tank off and sure enough - no power to the pump. Checked the pump by connecting to the battery and it primed fine. Today I've run a new circuit for the pump and piggy backed off the sidestand switch relay so it will operate as before. The problem is now that the pump just runs constantly trying to 'prime'. When I ran it off the battery I'm sure it was ok then - it ran for a second to prime then stopped as it should. Now running off the battery give the same constant 'priming' noise.
Thing is - why should it run like that now? It looks to me as the pump has stopped working as the bike won't start.
Am I right to assume the pump should just run for a second as you turn the ignition on - until it has achieved the right fuel pressure - then it stops until fuel is needed to be pumped? There is no other control to the pump from the Motronic or anything as I can see. The tank has been laying on its side for a while and I initially ran the pump in that position but I can't see how that would have done it.
What can I do to check it anyway? In laymans terms! I can disconnect the fuel lines and see if fuel is being pumped I guess, but I just need to confirm that a straight replacement power curcuit to the pump SHOULD work.
