I have a 2004 gs when the fuel guage gets low and starts to give you miles is this to empty or to resevre and what sort of range should i be getting to a tank

It's to empty, there is no reserve on these bikes. In reality you will probably get a bit after it says zero but best not to rely on that.

As Soon as I see the milage telling me 49 miles and fuel warning I reckon to have 15 miles before im walking.

I've ran mine to five miles and put 18 litres in. So still had 2 litres left. So maybe 20 more miles

It is really easy to work out your total fuel range. Reset the trip meter when you've topped of the tank and then you don't have to rely on the fuel gauge.

On average you will use 1 litre of fuel for every 10 miles, so a 23 litre tank will give 230 miles to empty. I never rely on the fuel gauge.

They all vary mate. Check it by carrying a few litre in a can and run it til empty.

I ran out on the motorway on holiday in May. Was on the way to catch a ferry so you can imagine just how pleased my other half was I was relying on the range readout and it said I still had 30 miles left. So, I would advise heading for fuel as soon as the light comes one ....

My fuel strip gauge did a b****k ages ago. I managed with the mileage trip but soon enough I ran out. It normally takes me a long time to use 34 litres so I get out of the habit of checking. I've recently fitted a new gauge and I now always carry a Givi 2.5 litre fuel can.

The last fill was 26 litres to cover 280 miles (not bad as I wasn't hanging about). But I'm usually doing town work and shorter runs putting me well below 40mpg so would be near empty at 280 miles.

so when they qoute 20 liters (5.3 US galons) iclunding 4 litre reserve ,this means 16 litres till the warning light then 4 litres till empty

They will quote what looks best. So 20 litres including 4 litres reserve is 16 + 4 =20

I don't know about the GS but on my 2008 GSA, the low fuel warning is calculated by the computer, its not a separate switch. Once the fuel strip fails you are on your own with no low fuel warning and no reserve fuel supply.

On long runs I can get at least 320 miles before filling, maybe 350. On short runs I can be out of fuel in 270 miles. Filling every 250 is fine when Im doing short runs but leaves the best part of 10 litres in the tank when its used on long runs.

That's why I bought the Givi spare fuel bottle. It's a pain when it stalls at traffic lights and refuses to start but at least I'm not walking home.

How many litres do you put in at that mileage. Just curious because if you only put in let's say 27 litres you still have a potential 60-80 miles of fuel left. My new fuel strip is working well and I can run mine down to 5 miles left and put in 35 litres to brim it. Not run out yet. Though I rarely push it that low before refueling.

If you run out of fuel, try leaning the bike as far over as you dare to the left.

My GSA ran out years ago, the "sucking jet pump" (Venturi) inside the fuel tank wasn't drawing fuel back from right side to the left where the fuel supply pump sits. A lean to the left and some sloshing sounds and I managed to restart the bike and ride a few miles to the nearest petrol station.

I filled up tonight at 282 miles - 23.59 litres of Shell v-Power Nitro+ @ £1.209 p/l, so if BMW are to be believed I still had 9.41 litres left in the tank.

My GSA takes 34 litres from bone dry empty. The leaning the bike over trick doesn't work for me because my fuel pump is still behaving itself.

My trip computer range seems to read conservatively. It comes on with 45 miles left and I've never got more than 18l in, sometimes 15 or 16. Basically I don't trust it so the nominal 220 mile GS range is actually about 180 between fills.

I've fitted 35.6L in my GSA...must have been on fumes. Spec on the GSA is 33L @90% volume.

Yes there is and no I wasn't. The tank takes 36L if brimmed.
