fuel smell

Each time I park my bike (GS adv 2004) in the garage, I get a penetrating fuel smell a couple of minutes after I switched the engine off. Leaving the garage door open for half an hour kind of solves the problem, but then it's getting pretty cold inside. My wife is also doing the laundry there so she is not so happy with either the smell nor the cold.

Any of you guys have the same problem? I checked for fuel leaks but none discovered so far. Fuel ranges are normal (450 - 500 kms with 30 liter tank).

I live on a steep slope, about 30 meters long, which I normally ride in first gear, straight into the garage. Switching the engine off outside and pushing the bike in is not an option. Tried it once and it wrecked my back for a week.

I have the same problem. Petrol smell is coming from the tank expansion vent - appears to be operating normally? No leaks, and I've replaced all the parts.

I get rid of my petrol smell by connecting up the breather to a length of garden hose which exits outside the garage door. Disconnect after an hour. No smells.

And Mrs Spout can now hang her laundry in there too!

I've given up trying to find a cure.

I have the impression you consider it as a normal functioning of the breather with the 30 L tank now (after all the fiddling and checking). It all seems pretty logical to me (gas expansion due to hot engine), but then other GSers with a 30L should have the same prob innit.

Did you consult your dealership on this?
I see my dealer on friday and will explain him the problem. See what he says. Keep you posted anyway.

Just talked to my dealership this morning and the smell seems to be normal for the reason you explained. Apparently ADV tanks smell more than others. Dunno why.

I would like to ty your solution with the garden hose but don't know where to look for the breather. Could you pst a pic of how you do that. Hope this will bring back peace in the family

there are three breathers by the right footpeg. One from the battery, one from the fuel filler (for water/spilt petrol) and the other is the tank breather. Battery breather is smaller than other two, blowing up each of the others will find the tank breather.
I simply connect a hose (via a fuel filter - just an easy adapter) to the tank breather:

Which then exits out the door:
