Hi Guys
My bike cuts out after 1mile riding.
I must leave it for a half hour and then she starts again only to cut out in a miles time. What do you think could be the problem ?
Thanks for the assistance.
Cheers Silo

Well not knowing what bike and how many miles it's done i'd suggest the hall sensor is breaking down when hot.

Hello and welcome Silo.

What's really scary about Mr Steptoe's reply is that due to a stunning level of telepathy coupled to centuries of experience he is probably right. I certainly wouldn't bet against him.

Just on the off chance that it is fuel starvation try opening the fuel cap when it cuts out. If it doesn't flip open perhaps you have a blocked breather pipe.

Thanks for the replys. The bike is R850R '99 model 44000 miles on the clock. Please dont discriminate because I dont have a GS ! ha ha..just really need some help as the bmw service centre in Cape Town lick their lips when they see me coming and I just cant afford to be ripped a new one so early in the year. i opened up the tank and pulled out the contraption that holds the pump and filter. checked for blockages and all looks good. Fuel pump is working fine to. Prior to doing that the bike now is even struggling to start. Steptoe do you still reakon its the hall sensor? Is that something I need to take to BMW or is that something I could replace myself ?

Does your rev counter do odd stuff (jump around etc)? This is a possible symptom of hall sensor problems (although it doesn't always occur).

I did mine last year. There's a bit of dismantling but it's easy enough to replace the hall sensor (from memory: tank off, slacken alternator, alternator belt off, crankshaft pulley off, disconnect and remove sensor plate - reverse to assemble, re-timing the ignition on the way).

If you intend to do home maintenance (and there's no reason you shouldn't - they're mostly easy bikes to work on), it would be a very good idea to get hold of a Haynes or Clymer manual - this sort of job is fully covered.

Packer, I blew into both breather pipes and they not blocked. MattWThanks for the reply -no, the rev counter does not do any odd stuff.

The bike like a said used to run for a mile. No she doesn't start at all :(
I pulled one of the spark plug covers out and I cannot see any spark when I press the ignition ?

thats a relief .... i thought she was tickets !
