A little bit of everywhere...
My fuel strip packed up (again…!) a few months ago, and I applied the tried and trusty black electrical tape to cover the annoying flashing amber warning triangle.

Roll forward a few months and I decided to try the Zapp-It technique earlier this week, but no joy there (and only a £2 lighter, so was worth the try!).

I typically don’t use the fuel gauge, generally run off the mileage trip meter, so when I saw the MotorWorks ‘fuel strip emulator’ I thought I’d give it a bash as a cheap bypass, to stop the triangle of death drawing my attention the whole time.

Arrived today, a 2 minute job to plug in and the warning triangle is now gone.

It works by telling your system the fuel tank is full - so the fuel tank always shows full and there are no functions relating to the fuel gauge in the computer (remaining range countdown etc), but that’s not an issue with me as I use the trip meter as I said.

Very easy bypass, if you don’t fancy/can’t be arsed/don’t want to pay to replace the fuel strip.

I saw that, might be a slight issue on GSAs, where the low fuel triggers (as I've been told, not sure it is 100% accurate) the reflow pump to move the fuel from one side to the other.
Also, the fuel pump operates at different rate when the fuel tank is on low fuel?

Mine is a gsa 1200 - I will let you know how it goes! Never heard of a reflow pump….

Sounds suspect…. It’s August, not April 1st…

:ROFLMAO:

No idea what your reflow pump is, and Google also doesn’t recognise it…

You are right. It's something I must have (incorrectly) read on here or another forum and it somehow stuck. I was checking the RealOEM parts now and, yes, there is just the single fuel pump.
This message here might shed some light on fuel recirculation within the tank. Here too. (Assuming he is correct).

Regarding pump 'speed'. When I was trying to solve the issue with my broken strip, again I remember reading here someone stating that the fuel pump runs at higher pressure/speed/harder when the tank has less fuel in it. So essentially having a broken strip indicating zero fuel all the time would wear the pump more.
To be fair I've had a broken strip for a few years, then switched to the float and simulator from Henk (that misreads most times, so it almost always indicates low fuel unless you are on a full tank) and never had issues with the pump :)

The emulator shows the tank as full all the time so if there is any variability of pumping power it won’t be a problem.

I was looking at this emulator on motorworks earlier today... any idea what's inside the box? My amateur assumption is that the fuel strip works on basic resistance - I've got an image in my mind of that box containing a single £0.001 resistor 😬

Had a look in my files I must have saved these from earlier posts but it gives you an idea that it could cost up to £0.003 :)
I have a float now so did not need to pursue it.

I have had this exact set up installed for about 9 years now. It cost about £1.60 for the resistors. I bet that if you open up one of those emulators this is what you will find. If you fit either the resistors or the emulator don't forget that when you turn the ignition key on for the first time it will take a while to actually change the fuel gauge reading.

Aha! This is exactly what I imagined… well, I imagined this is how it worked, not the actual resistor values and pins. My imagination isn’t *that* good :)

Thanks for sharing! I’m off to raid my electronics supplies to see if I’ve got the right rezzers now.

Can confirm that a few pennies worth of resistors has removed the fuel warning light. In fact, I've now got NO warning lights having invested in Motoscan Ultimate and the Unicarscan OBD dongle. TPMS warnings... GONE! Service warning... GONE!

The old girl is even MOT'd now - been out in the afternoon sunshine today (y)

Simon, Can you confirm if the Motoscan Ultimate with a OBD2 M+ can re-calibrate the fuel strip before I fork out the £400 for the GS911? Spent the last few weeks (after stripping my bikes/tank/pump/fuel strip etc apart & reading up on ALL forum sites and to me there seems to NO ONE out there NOT having an issue with both old and new BMW's with this strip and some with floats NOT 100% accurate? Lawsuit against BMW would be the best way forward in today's world............owner of R1200GSA 2007

its had that feature for 6 years and all in its less than £100

motoscan is written by a diagnostics super hero who understood much of how BMW do it 9 years ago - of course he's had some issues perfecting how to get at and communicate to completely match the utter madness they've badly cobbled together and almost manage to get to work sometimes (when they haven't forgotten to tun half the safety features on or make warning lights illuminate to the correct colour - like the anitwheelie works randomly, or the traction control was left disabled or the warning lights come up amber keep going - rather than red stop now ! 7 updates on software on my 2019 bike and now another one coz they forgot another bit)

I have been in contact with BMW customer services about my fuel strip which is about to get replaced for the 12th time.

I have had a good response so far. I'll let you know the outcome after it is fitted. 😉😁

Sorry - late to seeing this…

I haven’t calibrated the fuel strip but it looks like you’ve had the confirmation you need from others.

There are threads covering the differences between the Motoscan software/dongle and the GS911 but all I can say is that every function I feel like I would need (as a capable home-service-it-yourselfer) is on the much less expensive Motoscan option…
