Make sure its a pre twin cam. If its a twin cam bike it has a float fuel gauge and zapping it won't fix it.

Don't suppose it's possible to change a 2009 strip to a float is it?
Ok, I thought it went back to float on twin cam. No the float can't be retro fitted apparently because the software won't support it.

It's not just software, different wiring plugs into different pins on the computer.

Just a quick note of thanks to Seahorse, who offered to "zap" my fuel strip with his Piezo tool.
Graciously gave up his time on a Sunday to a complete stranger, gave me a cup of tea, whilst he zapped the fuel strip 6 times.
Voila!! Fixed and fuel gauge working again.

One year on and my fuel strip still working fine , so not a bad bodge

yip its 206 quid for a new strip supplied and fitted and coded to the bike at a dealers,but you do get a two year warranty ,so for the price of a bbq lighter i suppose its got to be worth a try
I just paid £170 today at the BMW dealer, including 2 yr warranty. Maybe the labour charge was reduced as my bike was in for the fuel pump recall at the time?
I have just bitten the bullet and ordered a new fuel strip from Bahnstormers (£108 plus postage) and I will calibrate it using a GS911. I did try and buy one from Motorworks but they are not allowed to supply them anymore due to the failure rate I know I don't really need it as always use the trip anyway, but one day I will forget to do that. I will do it only once though.

This probably doesn't concern you Beemerman, but I don't think they give the 2 yr warranty if its diy fitted.
If it dies within 12 months of purchase I will send it back under guarantee as I would for anything else. I might even try that up to the 24 months. We'll see what happens if and when the new one fails in that time. I don't see it any differently than anything else you would buy and fit to your bike yourself.
The new beta software for the GS911 will now show realtime values for the fuel strip, giving the ampage/voltage to the heater (mines showing 1.4ma and 0.1v for the heater element) and voltage for the sensor strip (mines showing 0.0v). If I test pins 2 and 3 on the fuel strip its showing open circuit. When I recalibrate it on the GS911 its showing an error at the end of the process so I think the strips now duff.

Or your bike auto resets to total miles and you crash the bike trying to switch to trip display.

Well, I got the diagnosis completely wrong. I got the new fuel strip, connected it up to the fuel pump, connected the upper heater connector and the GS911. Calibrated the new strip and the sequence went fine ending up with a successful calibration message. So all good. Except I went onto the GS911 forum and there's another post from someone getting the same error message that I had when trying to calibrate the original fuel strip. He then reposted by saying he had sussed that one out by also connecting up the FPC on the fuel pump and then his calibration was all OK. So I go and connect up the old strip this time fitting both the heater and FPC connector and lo and behold the calibration was successful!!!
Quite why the new strip would calibrate without the FPC connected I have no idea, but the end result is I have a spare brand new strip in the parts bin. I have put 10litres of fuel in and the lower two bars are showing so I will have to wait and see what happens on a full tank but the old strip seems to be working and calibrated now.
