Me again!
I'm wanting to do a FULL oils change on my 1150 sometime in the next month to 6 weeks. I dont want to get into 'which oil is best' but I would like advice on:
1)oil filter choice, removal and refitting
2)changing final drive oil - pain in the arse? - Which oil?
3)Sump plug - needs replacing? Which sump washer size?
4) Do I need a different gearbox oil?
5)Anything I've missed?

Sorry if all this sounds obvious, but I want to get it right first time!

1. motorworks or motobins have a full service kit at the same time buy an oil filter removal tool

2. remove the filler plug first because if you can not get this out you will not be able to refill

3. see 1. kit has all the washers in it

4.some people use synthetic 75/80 gear change is sweeter same oil for final drive

5. do it on a regular basis not mileage dependent changing oils is the cheapest form of maintenance :beerjug:

T - just noticed you are in North Wilts, whereabouts? I'm from Salisbury (long way from home!!) Hoping to get home at some point in June / July for a little play on the Plain. ME and a mate have been taking the XRV boys up and over the ranges for a few years now.

I ordered an oil filter, removal tool and crush washer set from Motorworks on Friday which will allow me to do the oli, gear oil and final drive. Cost £20.50 and despatched the same day. I bought 15w40 Enhanced Mineral Oil and 2 x litre bottles of Differential Gear Oil EP 80W/90 GL-5 from Halfords cost £31. Not sure if thats the right stuf but matched the specs listed.

Bateman - is that diff oil you mention the right stuff? Not questioning it, but loking to pick up some oil for 'the change' later today and if it is then I'll pick some up.

why 2 bottles of GL5 ?

1 litre is enough to do both the gear box and final drive. 'halfords gear oil - part synthetic 75w/90' - £9.95 (as steptoe says elsewhere the crucial spec is 'GL5')

I get my engine oil... 15w/40 mineral API SJ from Wilko's £8.49 for 5L :thumb

change the oil every 3,000 and oil/filter every 6,000. - and rather than faff around I do the gearbox AND final drive every year.

(so far - the gear oil coming out looks (and smells) exactly like the new oil going in)

Tony,
Your GS must be smaller than mine :D. I fit 1 litre in the gearbox and 0.25 in the FD (and did not use the "deep throath" approach :augie).
I used exactly the oil you suggest, but changed back to GPS (the redy one). I feel the enginee smoother at low temperatures.
There are 134,567,645 threads about oil and I guess the bottom line is: you pay for what you get!
Hope not confusing one more noble member of this wonderful community (thank you all guys!)

I hope so as I changed mine last night - but I only went by the specs on the bottle to be honest - EP 80W/90 GL-5. I also looked at the 'Halfords gear oil - part synthetic 75w/90' but in the end went with the 80W/90 as per the book spec. I know nothing about oils though - the Halfords guy sounded fairly knowledgeable so I went with his suggestion that it would be fine.

I bought 2 x 1-Litre bottles because the gear oil I changed last night took a full litre (even though the manual says 750ml I think) and the final drive took about 250ml.

However - take the advice of someone else on here as I only changed mine myself for the first time yesterday and I certainly made quite a mess, especially when i removed the engine oil drain plug and a tidal wave of hot dirty oil came flooding out all over the garage floor and completely missed the drain can I placed underneath....

You should be fine with that (that's what I use too).
One small piece of advice: unscrew the plug before running the engine and screw it back without tightening it too much. It will require less effort to remove it with hot engine.

maybe!! all I know is a 1 litre bottle is just enough. though looking at my haynes I'm short in the gearbox by 30ml (in theory) but it's still up to the level - so what do i know. :augie

just been out for a peep.. and yes - still is. (on both GB and FD)

that nice mr Haynes says 800ml in gear box and 230ml in fd. (but what does he know)

Just notice I have an 1150 :P. That may explain the discrepancy :thumb! Or not... :eek

That's a motorbike specific oil, for use on bikes with engine/gearbox/ wet clutch combined in the same unit -

Not needed on a BMW, it has a separate gearbox which uses gearoil and a dry clutch.

gear oils

Has anyone here use Redline Heavy weight shock proof gear oil in a GS. I have been using it for years in my harleys and thought I would give it a go in the GS just wondered if anyone has tried it already.

Its a 75/80 gear oil with a plastic polymer in suspension in the fluid which give the oil an OEP (oil extreme pressure) of about 220 which is normally like grease. It transformed the gear change on both my buell and my softail and the wifes fxr.

shockproof gear oil

Thanks for the link, on reflection I think I will give it a go, I do a lot of in town traffic and the gearbox gets a bit of a hammering so every little helps.

Hey guys - Have completed the oil changes! one small thing, after running the engine the level in the sight glass has dropped slightly, should I top up so that it reads full again or leave it as it was upto the line when i started?
Thanks in advance...
