Had a funny one last week, while ice and snow on the ground, I thought I'd turn the old girl over and make sure she started, as I hadn't managed to put her in the garage due to the snow.

So, she started first time, and then when I took the key out, she carried on running. Killed the engine using the kill switch, and could start her again without any problems. I had to disconnect the battery to make sure that no oiks could nick the bike (not that they could get very far). The bike is three weeks out of original warranty, but extended it for a year (thank God!). I was pretty sure it was a frozen ignition, but couldn't work out why it had frozen engaged! Tried a few suggestions from the threads, de-icer, hot key, a little wd40, no difference.

Called Mondial assist, who WOULDN'T come out, as the bike was working.

Then, after an hour, checked again, the engine now warning me of the EWS failure, so bike now officially not working, out came Mondial. They diagnosed a faulty microswitch in the ignition (having taken it off to reset the switch and EWS).

It went into SBW in Hertford yesterday, and while it was there, I asked them to fix the corrosion on the front of the engine, that was really really bad, they did this on BMW's goodwill (parts & labour).

Also, got a new F800GS for a loaner - truly awful bike, exhaust note sounds like a mixture of angry wasp and loud hairdryer, I know the 1200 isnt the nicest of notes, but I felt embarrased revving the little thing. Also, it had a flowjet style screen, that was utter utter sh1te.

All's well that ends well. Big thumbs up for BMW and SBW.

Seeing your warning regarding extended warranty, what's the cost from BMW. Mine is 2 years old in March so I might well consider it as a realistic option, seeing as what repair costs can be.

Thanks for the info'.

If that includes cover in Europe then for £30 ish per month it doesn't sound OTT.

I've had one call out in the last year and the BMW service was pretty good. If I'd had to sort that lot out for myself it would have been a pretty stressful experience.
