G650 Sertao - gearbox woes and Touratech adjustable gear lever?

So it's very likely I will be stripping this bike to pieces this weekend. I will start by stripping out the clutch while its in the bike.

If the clutch was causing the problem what am I looking for. I assume all within the actuation linkages and bearing?

If clutch ok and I have to remove engine - are there ANY short cuts I can make if I only need to get to the transmission. Eg can I leave the right hand side alone with Dynamo and rotor left alone?

Thanks

Timo

If clutchless changes are no different my bet would be selector forks. Although unusual for the low miles, if it's had a hard early life then entirely possible.

Before stripping I would be posting over on f650.com and advrider.com to broaden opinion.

Good luck. :thumb

Update - I have been a complete doofus!

I popped the bike into Rainbows BMW in Rotherham last Saturday and the Service Manager (Steve) and the mechanic (Nick) had a ride out on it in the morning. He gave it some beans and could never get it to not upshift from 2nd to 3rd, Nick mentioned there was a tiny bit of clutch play but other than that could not see anything wrong. While I was there I picked up an oil filter and changed the oil when I got back and gave her another ride out. After a while same problem again, rang Rainbows and they said drop it back again. Nick and another mechanic both took it out for a ride for some time - still nothing wrong - I was starting to think I had lost my marbles!

They did mention the touratech foot pegs - they are lowered for my big frame but they also move your foot forward and nearer the gear lever. I still didn't think this was the issue as I could still move my foot upwards, rotate clockwise fine.

On the way back it started doing it again! I was moving my foot vertically up, rotating it still no joy. Then a light bulb finally flicked on....what does the lever need to do after you have shifted up...........drop back down again for the ratchet and pawl to grab next notch on the selector drum. My big foot and boot wasn't letting the lever drop back down because the lowered peg and short gear lever!!! What a doofus!

I was going to buy the ugly looking Touratech adjustable gear lever but they were out of stock so I made my own from a pitbike foldable gear lever and M6 x 16mm stainless bolts ~£10 (also very Heath Robinson)

The result:

All sorted no problems what so ever - I gave it some real beans last night and no upshift issues at all. 1st is still a bitch (just need to not pull the clutch in much when selecting 1st from stand still - I can live with that). I am so relieved and happy. It is SO much easier to use now with this simple cheap mod.To think I nearly pulled the whole engine gearbox out - what an ejit!

Original lever and lowered pegs!

Modified Timo pit bike lever mod:

Thank you so much for your advice on here, someone did mention to try riding in my trainers and Timolga did mention his own 'modified' gear lever.

Oh by the way - BMW Steve and Nick were fantastic, fed me coffee and I used up about 45 mins of their time on Saturday. They didn't charge me a bean. Its nice to know there is some good customer service and somewhere I can take it if the bike ever does get a major fault

I shouldn't be allowed out the house sometimes :nenau

I get really involved with the complex stuff and miss the bleeding obvious!

FFS, made me smile....................i'm sure the good lads at Rainbow had a wee smile too

Glad it all worked out well for you. Now, what can you buy with all the money you've now saved :D

I am still amazed the problem only recently started as had same set up for 6 months and issue only occurred above 4500rpm?!

Anyway here lies a thread/post for anyone else who can't change gear and has over looked the obvious : )
