Hello again folks,

Despite being happy with the G650 generally, I've had a recurring problem which has had the bike back into the shop four times now, with no fix yet, and wonder if any of the collective experience here might have any ideas.

Very rarely, and I mean no more than once in 200 miles, the electrics fail.

I'm happily riding along one minute. The next: no engine, no lights, no dash read out. Nothing. Nada. Zippo.

Problem goes away immediately when I turn the ignition key off, then back on again - everything works, engine starts and off I can go.

Whilst this has happened only at slow speeds in light traffic so far, it's not a particularly good thing as you can imagine, and as a new rider it's not doing my confidence much good.

The local dealer has been great at taking it back in each time to investigate, but have said they have never seen this happen. So far I've had the ignition key barrel replaced (the key was stiff, but maybe not related) and some corrosion was found in the wiring loom around that (cut out and re-connected). Each time the problem has been goes for a few weeks.

The bike is kept outside and uncovered, but the cutting out does not seem to be related to recent/over night rain etc. It gets a healthy dose of FS365 and WD40 as needed, and is generally kept pretty clean between rides.

I haven't spotted anything consistent that might be causing it - nothing with the riding conditions seems to be a factor; not related to acceleration, indicators etc being switched on/off.

So, despite having had a lot of fun with the bike (8,000 miles or so since May last year) I've lost confidence and looking at an upgrade to an F800GS (or a 1200GS if I can afford it). More interested to hear if this is indeed a one-off problem.

Try doing a reset, unplug the connection to the 'brain' under the seat or disconnect the battery.
Leave it for 20 mins before reconnecting.
Always wait for your dash lights to go out before hitting the starter and don't touch the throttle.

Thanks for the quick reply - I'll give that a try tomorrow.

I guess you're thinking it's related to the computer and that a reboot should sort it? Not second guessing you, just an (aero) engineer with zero bike experience and wanting to learn!

Thanks for the link.

Well, today I gave up and traded up to an F800GS. A much fun as the 650 has been, I've lost confidence with that particular bike, unfortunately.

Mine did this too!

I had a similar experience - riding along, minding my own when the bike just died under me - engine, lights - the lot. Not funny! I was able to coast to the kerb and try to re-start. After a few attempts and a lot of "effing and jeffing" later I dismounted and had a hamlet moment. I was halfway to work and not sure whether to abandon ship or try again. I tried again (of course!) and she started instantly with our any coughing or indication anything had been wrong. Wozzat? It hasn't happened since, but slightly dented my confidence in t'bike I must say!
