Hello again folks,
Despite being happy with the G650 generally, I've had a recurring problem which has had the bike back into the shop four times now, with no fix yet, and wonder if any of the collective experience here might have any ideas.
Very rarely, and I mean no more than once in 200 miles, the electrics fail.
I'm happily riding along one minute. The next: no engine, no lights, no dash read out. Nothing. Nada. Zippo.
Problem goes away immediately when I turn the ignition key off, then back on again - everything works, engine starts and off I can go.
Whilst this has happened only at slow speeds in light traffic so far, it's not a particularly good thing as you can imagine, and as a new rider it's not doing my confidence much good.
The local dealer has been great at taking it back in each time to investigate, but have said they have never seen this happen. So far I've had the ignition key barrel replaced (the key was stiff, but maybe not related) and some corrosion was found in the wiring loom around that (cut out and re-connected). Each time the problem has been goes for a few weeks.
The bike is kept outside and uncovered, but the cutting out does not seem to be related to recent/over night rain etc. It gets a healthy dose of FS365 and WD40 as needed, and is generally kept pretty clean between rides.
I haven't spotted anything consistent that might be causing it - nothing with the riding conditions seems to be a factor; not related to acceleration, indicators etc being switched on/off.
So, despite having had a lot of fun with the bike (8,000 miles or so since May last year) I've lost confidence and looking at an upgrade to an F800GS (or a 1200GS if I can afford it). More interested to hear if this is indeed a one-off problem.
