Anyone experienced similar?

I have bought a G650 xChallenge that has an irregular metallic noise when at idle in neutral.

Upon startup it is fine for 5-10 seconds, then this intermittant noise occurs. Sounds like a metallic bang/thud, as if a loose nut if spinning around the stator housing. Not excessively loud, but it is there. It doesn't sound like backlash.

Pull the clutch in (in neutral) and it doesn't change. Put it into 1st with clutch in and it disappears. Engine alone sounds v sweet.

I've had the clutch casing off, and whilst it is the older design and has some wear, it doesn't perform any worse and my other bikes. Inside of engine is very clean with little signs of dirty residue in any of the castings. I did try swapping the casing with another bike and it made no difference.

Googling it, I have found the attached. It refers to some engines being assembled without a thrust washer,

http://www.f650gs.crossroadz.com.au/GearboxRepair.html

it states this results in "the dogs of the gear wheels of the 3rd and 5th gears (#s 6 and 9) knocking against each other". This does sound like what I guess this sort of sound would. It also says it doesn't cause any damage (I have done an oil change and there was v little swarf)

Anyone any thoughts or experience of this? Don't really want to do an engine strip down unnecessarily (or indeed at all!)

Thanks

Gareth

Hmm. Only happens when it is on the side stand. Doesn't when vertical.

Someone on advrider suggested sprag clutch. Anyone had one of them go, and how do you check?

Thanks
