I ride north to the pyramids of Meroë which are superb. There was a group of Nigerians who study at Sudan University and I got swept up in their selfie taking.

Meanwhile the oil filler has been giving me grief but in aeeuvalnhwre, Hasan helped me wind thin twine around the insert which we hooenwillnsroo it moving up and down so much.

There seems to be a real fuel shortage up here due to the current friction with South Sudan. When I mentioned that I had seen lots of cars lined up at a fuel station at the nearby town I was told they had been there several days in hope of petrol.

So tomorrow morning the mission is to scout out black market fuel in the next town and then decide whether to head into the interior, to Karima and Jebel Barkal, or towards the Red Sea and a ferry to Saudi...

I also discovered I have inadvertently taken up money laundering.....a rather wrinkled note emerged from the trousers I washed last night

Leaving Meroe (without pictures, sadly)

I awoke vaguely anxious and thought about why....came up with 3 possible things
1. The deep sandy patches on the way out were certainly one...the fully loaded GS is a real pig in heavy sand (or at least at my skill level!)
2. would I find fuel...I had to decide whether to backtrack or keep moving forward in my fuel hunt. Whilst my host Vivian had recommended going back, Hasan agreed forward was better as Al Damer and Atbara were, he said, likely sources of benezene.
3 would the oil plug fix Hasan and I had done, hold?

I had to remind myself that all these things could be managed.

And indeed I made it back the few kilometres to the road without tumbling in the sand which was a start.

I decided to keep moving forward (I hate backtracking) and trust fuel would be available. And if not, I told myself, I would wait until it was!

Finally the Hasan repair had certainly stopped the plug bouncing up and down like a demented lid on a boiling kettle. But very soon I saw the oil begin to flow, even more than before!

This became really frustrating and coloured my whole day and my subsequent decisions on direction (as it did, too, to my boots, trousers and left hand side of the bike which is now coated in a film of oil. (Blokes who grew up with British bikes may be used to this but it really put me off....and even the touring pannier got so lubricated that it moved on its rails and jammed its lock...as I was to discover that evening when I dearly wanted to change clothes but couldn’t open the pannier ).

So I passed by and popped into a lot of sandy filling stations...which were fuel less . But with my tank showing empty I rolled into one on the outskirts of Atbara....and they had no queue but DID have benzene.

So the first two....sand and fuel ....were ticked off my worry list.

But the leaking oil plug has become a real pain...I even hunted down a litre container of 20:50 as the bike will need a top up soon, at the rate is is spewing oil!

So when I got to the T junction I had a choice of going left and following the Nile up to Karima and Jebel Barkal, or right to Port Sudan and the ferry to Saudi.

But the oil issue makes me uncomfortable heading off into the wilds again. As I sit at the crossroad and debate this I check and see there is a BMW Motorrad in Jeddah....maybe that that can help sort this thing out?

And I conclude, regretfully, that I am going to have to head East and North to the Red Sea, prematurely and all because of such a small thing.

So with a full tank and a weeping oil plug I head East into the desert

If all else fails, someone on the forum might have a spare tappet cover, they could send out to you!

Simon can you just wrap some duct tape tightly around the whole rocker cover like a bandage to keep it from popping up and down??? Enough so that it laps over itself by a few inches to provide grip despite the heat ??

I cannot understand what the Feck is going on with this! Never in 16 years specifically working on BMWs have I ever seen this!

Did you get the insert to set down into its seat in the rocker cover with the locating tab forward (If I recall ??)

Do you have a 2 O rings?? One on the insert and one on the filler plug??

Is the oil definitely coming out of the filler plug area?

Web address Linky https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sh...21-BMW-R_1150_GS_00_0415,0495_&diagId=11_2807

Attached images of the Link and part numbers 5 6 7 8 are the components you need

I wonder did they fit any O ring nearly the right size, as they did not have the parts in stock at that last service ?? I mean that is where you start having difficulties isn't it ??

I have seen the Sparkplug tube seal Part number 3 (also ringed) damaged by age or reassembly and the oil trails out the back of the head by the sparkplug cover (whether it be single or twin spark) and blows in the wind to cover your trouser leg and boot

Thanks again. Yes I have all the necessary o rings as per parts explosion.

And it is Definitely coming from there.

I am puzzled the seat was moving so much. Winding fine twine alongside the o ring stopped that movement....but potentially increased the oil leakage.

I have a day off the bike whilst I buy a ferry ticket. So may have another play with it.

But will also contact Jeddah BMW and any local bike group there for further assistance.

Simon, a few thoughts on the oil filler and those more knowledge can comment.

The problem started before the guy replaced the seals in Nairobi. You mentioned the oil had been "venting" and you thought BMW had overfilled it, which is why you asked him to look at the filler. So the fact the problem has been there before and after the Nairobi work, may mean the parts he put in were OK.

If the parts are OK and the breather tube seems OK, is there a way to check the breather is working correctly? A question to the more knowledgeable than me.

It seems obvious that the fine string needs to be removed as that has made things worse and may get you back to a point where you can live with it till you get to Jeddah.

My 2 pennyworth!

Thanks Jim. Happy to hear all sensible suggestions. May have to recheck the breather pipe in case I missed something.

Ahh Jeddah, I lived just off the Corniche many years ago, stunning looking out over the Red Sea. I reckon you must be one of the first ever people visiting on a tourist visa :thumb

Cheers Howz...do PM me any Jeddah recommendations....
