I tried to use two different garages' airlines to top up my tyres recently, and in both cases I couldn't do my rear tyre as the connection was obstructed by the cast wheels. No matter how I tried, it went on almost straight but not quite good enough to avoid it DEflating the tyre rather than inflating it. In one case I had to get out my portable compressor and in the other I had to use my pushbike pump - good for my biceps but there has to be a better way?!

Does anyone else have this problem?

Would some kind of adaptor solve it?

Thanks for any thoughts!

This is a very common problem at the state owned Pemex stations throughout Mexico. Many of them use the old small style brass air chuck but the newer stations almost all have a long chrome handled one that is impossible to get on the rear of the F650GS with cast wheels. You can access the front with some luck but never the rear.
I carry a flexible hose tire valve extension used on RV's with double rear tires.
It screws on and away you go. I always fill it over the amount to allow for leakage on removal. By the way, it takes the computer a little while to adjust to the new pressure, sometimes you can wait 10 or 15 seconds before seeing the new pressure on the readout.
The reason I got the flexible hose is because they are sold in packages of 2 and I could give one to a friend and the 90 degree adapter wasn't available anywhere in Mexico.

Topped up with some beautifull ESSEX air yesterday all ok

Total garage

but price hike from 20p to 50p

£8.10?!?!?!
Farkin hell!
Well, it is a "Genuine BMW" one after all.

I suppose my non genuine one which cost IIRC £1.49 from my local bike shop is no good then?

Joking aside - carry a pencil type tyre gauge for checking the pressure and only use the adaptor to inflate the tyre. As mentioned above, over inflate by a couple of pounds to allow for the removal of the adaptor and then correct the pressure with your gauge. Don't ride with the adaptor in situ.

Plus one for that,My mate did that on his K1100rt despite being told it wasnt safe. You`ve guessed it, on our way one morning to get a ferry catastophic valve failure. He was lucky he was only just pulling away :blast

When i had my R1100rt i bought two right angled valves from BMW(about £12 each)proper ones not the extensions.Unfortuneatly i can`t use them on my F800gs due to having tubes

I do not use garage pumps so cannot comment on the fit, I do use a battery booster/ air pump that has a rubber hose and a proper clip on, similar to a foot pump. I would think it would be easier to make room on the bike for a foot pump if going on a long trip, else buy an electric 3 in 1 or similar from Maplins.
