I agree..I use Basecamp on my Mac and find that 'search' is pretty poor. I hope Garmin improve it, plus enable postcode search (or is it just that I can't find it?)

Have not tried new version yet but quick work around is to use google maps. In a link to a location you want just use the lat/long and type this into Basecamp. After the first few tries it is pretty straightforward.

that sounds like harder work than twatting about with basecamp search

useful if you just have a postcode though.

Thanks chaps,

I have 3.3.1 and re postcodes on the Mac it is still not any better.

I think it could be a good programme but I preferred Mapsource to be honest (when I had my pc). Hopefully Garmin will work on it and make it a little less glitchy and user friendly.

Updated the mapping on my Zumo 550 and computer from 2008 to latest versions yesterday so job well done. :)

Postcode search?

Its been a couple of years now. Garmin seem more bothered by useless features. The day I can drag and drop a route from Google to a Zumo cannot come soon enough.

Create a bookmarklet in Safari.

Create a route in Google Maps.

Click on the bookmarklet.

Copy and paste into a textfile.

Load into BaseCamp.

Wonder what on earth is going on and wonder if the world has gone mad. You stare at the screen and wonder... wonder... what is that!

However, if your default activity type is 'motorcycling':

Click on the newly created illogical route, change the activity type to 'automotive' and 'recalculate'.

Breathe out in relief and be thankful for the creator of this utility.

This might also help when going between Google Earth and Basecamp.

FWIW MapSource was one of two programs which kept me on the PC even though everything has moved to a Mac. Having persevered with Basecamp for a while I'm happy to shelve Mapsource, although like everybody else has commented the find function is utter rubbish. Come on Garmin, sort it out!

...or.. create 20 x 250 mile routes in Mapsource.. then send to device.. Job Done.

BaseCamp wins over Mapsource once you get used to it. Give it chance. Easier to edit routes etc

Basecamp 4.0.4 loaded and STILL NO POSTCODE SEARCH :rob
City Navigator Europe 2013.3 loaded over a long time.... as usual :D

Basecamp 4.0.4 loaded and STILL NO POSTCODE SEARCH

Probably because in most other countries postal codes are far less specific than in the UK. They cover a much bigger area so are pretty useless when it comes to using them as a destination so far less useful for anything but helping out the postal service ensure a letter/parcel gets to the right area.

Even so it did work, after a fashion, in Mapsource so it should be incorporated at some stage.

For the time being I just use Google Maps to get a lat/long, drop a way-point anywhere and then edit and paste it into the relevant field. Quick and easy and Basecamp recognises the format and converts it to it's own N, E, S, W version. Takes all of 10-15 seconds to do.

Garmin seem to have no trouble with postcode search on the sat nav device.

Don't make excuses for Garmin!

Not making excuses for them, hopefully postcode search will be enabled at some point in the not so distant future, I would welcome it. However, as this feature is more important for us Brits and of no real use to the majority you can't realistically expect Garmin to give it top priority over functionality and bug-fixes within Basecamp that are useful to users globally and in their home market.

Basecamp has been designed to be used for a broader spectrum of activities than Mapsource was. So, regrettably, a lot of the improvements with each new release have little or no effect on road users.

'TYRE' is another option. Download it free and have a go. I use it occassionally instead of Mapsource. I used it for Morocco, I had the Morocco maps installed but with 'Tyre' I could create routes and then send them to the sat nav just like Mapsource.
Itspilsbury.

Garmin have only ever innovated in response to threat of competition. Tyre is pretty good considering it's written by a Dutch vicar, but you can't compare it to MapSource or even Basecamp...
