Garmin Express

nearly finished, then some unspecified error occurred and it stopped.

joy

error happened again :blast

so, how do install the update just to my mac? it's already on the unit memory.

i think that the Mapupdate update might be failing because there is not enough room on the internal memory for even western europe. that's what Garmin Express is telling me anyway even after i manually deleted a load of stuff.

i have now found the menu on Express to choose where to send mapping (it's below the region selection).

try again with Express then after 3 faild attempts with Mapupdate

all done - only took 10 hours or so.

must have downloaded the fucking maps 5 or 6 times. i lost count.

i used garmin express in the end. told it to install to unit and mac. i had to as it insisted i plug in the zumo before i got to the menu where you choose.

although i selected both, it only installed to the zumo. i then started again, but yanked the gps lead out before it could fuck that up again. selected install to mac and it did so.

simple

Garmin Express etc thinks its on my Montana, so won't let me update the maps. Tried mapupdater and got 2013.41 onto the PC, just not to battle egtting the maps onto the Montana

Has anyone tried the new map loader, Garmin Express, yet?

...

Any feedback?

Just had a day or two of aggravation with this...multiple downloads all failing towards the end of the process. Garmin support told me to avoid Garmin Express for the time being and instead use Map Updater from:
http://download.garmin.com/lmu/GarminMapUpdater.exe
That didn't work either- tried a few times. I sent various log files off to Garmin and they have come back this morning saying the Map Updater should now work...and it did, thank heavens. I must have attempted 7 or 8 downloads over the last couple of days which is why I assume I have been told by my ISP that I am close to my 100GB download limit...anyway, if you have been having difficulties loading 2013.41, it might be worth trying again with Map Updater.

Perhaps we should be charging Garmin for our time as their Beta testers?

Boy the people at Garmin need their head screwed on. Went to update my maps and the old Garmin Lifetime Updater (didn't have much of a life) was replaced by Garmin Express as mentioned. The new Garmin Express is better than Lifetime Updater but then I noticed that the map didn't update to my computer. After searching threads gave up and called Garmin as I have a Mac not PC.

Hello Garmin I am trying to update the maps on my computer with Garmin Express on my MAC?

Sir, we want to make the experience better for you so we have removed that functionality and you will have to plug in your Garmin every time you want to run Basecamp.

Why would I want to have to plug in my Zumo every time I want to use Basecamp?

We found that users had different versions of maps on their device and computer and was confusing.

Yes it is confusing. Is perhaps the cause of why users have different versions of maps on the computer and Zumo as a result of your software not updating both at the computer and Zumo at the same time?

Yes.

Do you think having to plug in the Zumo every time you want to run Basecamp is a positive user experience?

No actually. It sounds really cumbersome to be honest.

So why wouldn't you just update both the device and Basecamp at the same time?

Good question.

Where on your website can I find the information that you have removed all functionality to install maps onto the computer?

It is not on our website Sir.

Do you prefer more calls or less from consumers trying to use your product?

I guess less would be better.

:blast:blast:blast:blast

Anyways to save others the trouble here is the workaround. I got both the PC and MAC versions because the support person thought it would be the same for a PC and MAC. :blast

So, is the "map updater" that this uses different to the "Garmin Lifetime Map Updater" that Garmin says is obselete and not supported?

And, does this "Map Updater" also supercede Garmin Express?

And, when Garmin Express next prompts you that there is a map update available, do you first have to run the update through Garmin Express, or do you redo the above instructions?

My only complaint is that Garmin have so many ridiculously separate components, which all perform essential tasks whereas everything should be within one product with a wizard to take users through the stages
I use:
Basecamp: hated it at first after Mapsource, but now happy
Garmin Express: no faults whatsoever, but DO NOT save to your unit because the transfer is too slow, especially if going to the Garmin SD card slot.
Choose the save to Mac (or PC option), ITS EASY TO MISS, see the arrow and go and read a book or watch the telly during the hour download:
i-h6tmxLr-M.jpg

Map Manager: when done, you can use this to view all installed maps and delete unnecessary older maps(delete to Trash or recycle bin so you can restore f needed)
MapInstall: choose your region AND YOUR NEW MAP and send to device or send to SD card , which will be faster id you have the SD card in your computer.
However, if you use MapInstall to send everything to tour Garmin, then it will automatically remove and update older maps on the unit. The Garmin automatically searches for all maps on the devive and card but you don't want older maps lurking around. I can't really understand why anyone would need the whole of Europe on the device, just choose the area needed.
The entire process takes HOURS and I suspect that you are having troubles because of speed bottlenecks sending to your device with your slow USB cables and slow device to SD card slot:nenau

Thanks for the advice/comments from GrinningGSer. I have been having problems (see my "Updating Garmin Maps - A RANT" thread.

Anyway, after a few deep breathes, I re-read what you wrote and successfully and easily used garmin Express to download the map update to my computer.

But can I ask a favour: can you better explain how you then transfer the new maps to the SD card in the Nav IV?

Thanks in advance :-)

I spoke too soon!!!

Having slected "download to mac" in Garmin Express, it went through the motions of downloading the maps. But when I open Bascamp, I cannot see the new maps (2014.10). Any idea where they may be lurking? They are certainly not listed in the Maps tab at the top of the Basecamp page

My first thought is that the map download did not complete WHICH IS NOT UNUSUAL
If base camp can't see the maps then install Map Manager which will reveal all maps and the show in finder option will point to where the maps are. Try that first

Strange. MapManager does not list them, but when I look in the folder that Mapmanager tells me holds all the other maps, there they are: City Navigator Europe (Unicode) NT 2014.10.gmap.

So they are there, just that neither MapManager nor Basecamp recognises them.

And, when I open up garmin Express, that says that I have all available downloads, so I do not even have the option of redoing the download via Garmin Express.

Although I am really not impressed by Garmin's software, I do have that nagging doubt that it is "operator error" somewhere!

well now......i'm going to run against the trend here....
having just moved to a MacBook, I was about to install VMWare Fusion and run windows for Garmin's MapSource - but decided to give BaseCamp a go......

Garmin express worked a treat updating my maps and downloading them onto the Mac for use without the satnav connected......

And BaseCamp.......well it's moved on since I last tried it on a windows PC, and I have to say I like it! The ability to develop a "trip" and have a series of routes within seems to be entirely logical, and you can have them all aligned to a calendar.......me likes!

Bring on the backlash!

A quick update. As I could not think of anything else to do, I double clicked on the 2014.10 map file. It has opened MapManager and asked me if I want to install the maps. I said yes, and it is currently installing "City Navigator Europe (Unicode) NT 2014.10". I assume to Basecamp, but that might prove a false hope!!

Assuming I get them into basecamp and assuming that mapManager recognises them, how do I then use MapInstall to get them onto my Nav IV?

No, hopes dashed! MapManager says that the maps were successfully installed but they do not show up in MapManager nor Basecamp!!

No way am I an expert, but I wonder if for some reason your maps are not unlocked? Usually, provided that you have a registered device attached, the maps unlock automatically.
Try Basecamp/Maps/unlock maps online
I think you'll need your registered device attached
I can't remember if I've ever needed the original unlock codes. I haven't experienced your problem :nenau
