Garmin Express

No way am I an expert, but I wonder if for some reason your maps are not unlocked? Usually, provided that you have a registered device attached, the maps unlock automatically.
Try Basecamp/Maps/unlock maps online
I think you'll need your registered device attached
I can't remember if I've ever needed the original unlock codes. I haven't experienced your problem :nenau
No, that did not manage to bring the maps up in Basecamp, or on my Nav IV.

I am getting frustrated and pissed off now, so I shall leave it until tomorrow and try ringing garmin Support

When you open the map in Basecamp, and it starts to load with a green line that then turns red and finally disappears, the file is corrupt. You need to download again.

I have not got as far as "opening the map in Basecamp". Neither Basecamp nor MapInstall nor MapManager recognise that the 2014.10 version of the maps is on my computer.

And there is another thing: why do Garmin think it is such a good idea to have so many bits of disparate software, none of which talk to one another, and all of which seem to do tasks that should really sit in one application. It is all Bollocks, as the expression goes

The bits of software each have worthwhile functions, but why it cannot all be built into wizard's in one application defeats me.
I reckon your download is corrupt or incomplete. Move it to a trash directory and repeat the download.
My Europe NT 2013.41.gmap is 3.99 GB and I suppose files of this size are a challenge .Out of interest, what size is your download ?

An update:
Rang up Garmin Support this lunchtime and explained my problem. She could not explain why the 2014.10 download on my computer was not recognised by basecamp, but she guessed that it had got corrupted during the download. She also could not explain why in 14hrs Map Updater still failed to download the update! It wasn't looking promising at this point. Her only suggestion was to re-run Garmin Map Updater. I was dubious, but i ran through it all again (that said, early on in the process, she said that she needed to reset something and could I therefore restart the download process).

She also said that I should select "download to device and computer", as that was Garmin Supports recommendation. Although she said that some do prefer to download only to their computer, and then use Map Installer to load from computer to the Nav IV.

Anway, after another 2 hour or so wait, the download was completed and it worked: maps on both my Nav IV and Basecamp.

A couple of points raised during our conversation:
a) garmin are aware that there is an issue for some, as Garmin Express will not readily download updates to both the GPS and the computer. Their recommendation is to use Map Updater (not the Lifetime Map Updater). The latest version of Map Updater is v 4.2.2

b) There is some sort of beta of a new version of Garmin Express that they are "releasing to approx 10% of users". This version will download to both the device and the computer.

c) Garmin also recommend that we use a wired connection, not a wi-fi connection, when downloading the map updates. This is because the files are so large and are susceptable to interruptions in the internet connection.

d) make sure you disable the "energy saving" settings on your laptop/computer, again so that the download is not interrupted.

e) Apparently, Garmin Support do not recommend Micro SD cards larger than 8Gb for the 660/Nav IV. I did point out that if you have music on the device, then it is unlikely that an 8GB card would be big enough, given that the latest update is over 3GB. (In fact, when in Map Updater, it actually said that the download was 5.3GB+. She said that that was correct, but that the card only needed around 3Gb of spare capacity as some files would be overwritten)

So, there you have it. many thanks for the advice offered during my 'crisis'. i am off to play with Basecamp now!!

Glad to hear that its sorted, now obviously a corrupt or incomplete/ stalled download :thumb Now make sure that you are using the latest Basecamp which has postcode search: For Macs it is available from the App Store for free.

well now i'm really p!ssed off........
2014 maps come out and I can't manage to repeat what I achieved the other day......
I have maps on my Zumo 660 but cant get them installed to Mac Basecamp - or indeed find an option to do so......
......can anyone help?!

Just use map up dater and tick the correct boxes wait couple of hours all done.

Ps I use wi fi to laptop and have never had a corrupted download.

Updated mine yesterday. I use Garmin Map Updater 2.5.17.

With the later versions of map updater, it doesn't allow me to install across the device and the SD card - in other words, I have to download the maps to the PC, then use Map Install to add the maps to the sd card. GarminExpress for some reason tells me I can only have Western Europe!

But it all worked fine.

Yes, have that downloaded too. Not tried the facility yet though. Any tips?

Map Updater v 4.2.2 does allow you to load to the GPS and the computer. About 3 screens in, you come to a page where there is a box labelled "Advanced" in the middle of the screen. Click that and it allows you to choose where the update goes

No tips Paul08, there's lots of YouTube's and bumpkin has some excellent tutorials on here.
Basecamp is excellent now that the postcode lack is sorted. It does lots more including a post your adventure facility. I am not sure that I want to post my favourite routes on the net!
Basecamp is so different from mapsource but it's time to start using it and accept that it'll be a new learning curve.
Note that the map updating frustrations are not a Basecamp issue.

I never used mapsource, so am not tainted by experience of that. I will throw myself into Basecamp.

I have created some routes in Basecamp (for the Somme and in germany), copying routes that I came across. not sure how to post them here yet, but I will research that

Yes, it does, but 2.5.17 allows you to download to the PC and to the device/SD card as one event - with 4.4.2 it's always made me download to the PC, download a smaller area (eg UK) to the device, then use Mapinstall to add the other maps to the card. May just be something peculier to my set up.

Oh, and I'm using a 16gb card, works fine.

Yes, I am using a 16GB card too, and I don't think it was a problem. I just mentioned the fact that Garmin Support now "recommend" no larger than 8GB!

re using Map Updater v4.2.2, it definately allows you to downlaod updates to both Zumo/Nav IV and your compuer/basecamp in one go. No need to download to computer and then transfer to device

OK, so I've binned Express and used map updater, wow, we're getting somewhere, everything appeared straight forward and 70 minutes later I get the message that everything has installed successfully.

Yep, 2014.10 maps on my device but 2014.1 on basecamp. Maybe the 0 is just missing. Quick check and the maps look identical but when you send a route to the device it says the maps aren't the same and do I want to recalculate, no I don't. Same thing happens when you open the device, no again and route seems to be OK. Trouble is I can't help thinking that I'm going to come unstuck somewhere in the back of beyond with 10 bikes behind me and the sat nav directing me across the fields.

Maps were installed on a brand new mac that had not had any previous maps on it. Any ideas? Anyone else had this problem?

Definately not an expert but my two'penneth:

a) I am sure that the 2014.10 on the device and the 2014.1 on basecamp are one and the same thing.
b) have you selected the 2014.1(0) maps in Basecamp? You need to do this manually in the Maps drop-down menu.
c) Did you construct the routes in Basecamp using 2014.10 or earlier versions of the maps? if made using earlier versions of the maps, then when you need to open the routes one at a time in basecamp (having already selected the 2014.10 maps in the drop-down) and recalculate them. i.e. get them laid out on the new 2014.10 maps.
d) Then transfer to your device, which should also be running 2014.1(0)

But the many more knowledgable peeps on here may wish to correct teh above.

That said, I too transferred routes from a 2012.41 Basecamp to a 2014.10 nav IV and I could not see any differences/changes.

Thanks for the reply. I only have 2014.1 on my basecamp, which apparently is the right version to complement 2014.10 on the device (according to the Garmin website). I suppose I shall just have to live with the (minor) hassle of telling it not to recalculate routes.

On another note, just planned a trip from Devon to North Wales with the new trip planner. Much better than the older way of doing things, breaks down the legs in a much simpler format that enables you to plan when you are likely to get to each waypoint. Useful if you're meeting up with people along the route.
