Garmin i3 and 2610

Help - brain is now full.

Got an i3. Loaded onto it (with POI loader) pocketGPS camera database. Pretty hopeless - missing a fixed on the A3 that's been there for at least 5 years to my knowledge, but other than that was more or less on permanant warning for cameras that aren't there (and never have been, unless very rarely as mobiles).

Is there a better database?

Second - can I get a better screen warning anyhow - somethign that makes the screen flash etc, rather than just a small bar at the top of the (small) screen? Can I change the size of the screen speed display (not as it comes out the box I know - but any downloads etc?)

Third - re the 2610. Is there anything on the PGPS site that I can load onto this to show cameras (even if it's the same info as I have loaded onto the i3)?

AFAIK as 3rd party camera databases go the PocketGPSWorld database is as comprehensive as they come. Unfortunately your 2610 can only handle about 500 custom way-points (POIs) and has no proximity alert feature. The PocketGPSWorld database has tens of 1000s of cameras so it won't work on the 2610. Not all is lost though as there is an overlay that you can load via Mapsource (I think you'll have to re-upload all maps though) that will give a blob on the screen for the camera locations. I have this on my Quest and in all honesty it's not much use when compared to the proximity alerts on the i3 (I have one of those as well). For the best of both worlds you'll need something like a 2720 or, dare I say it..., a TT Rider. These will give you on bike navigation with the proximity alerts, having sound helps to draw your attention to these.

For the i3 there is a camera manager utility that someone developed that enables you to change how the alerts work, see top sticky thread here. In what way I'm not sure as I haven't used it but users seem to like it. Not sure if this will work with other Garmin units that have proximity alerts but don't see why not.

The data for the i3 is downloadable in a version with different types in different CSV files. At least the last time I paid a sub and downloaded them there was. If you wanted to cover a specific area you could in theory use MS Access, for example, to run a query on the data and delete any cameras outside a rectangular area. Doing this may get it down to less than 500 cameras (to fit on the 2610) but then again it would only be on screen way-point images which would be much the same as the overlay file but without full coverage so nothing would really be gained.

If you're certain that the fixed camera location (GATSO?) you mention isn't in the database and if you are a current subscriber letting them know via the online form could entitle you to free membership (this used to be life-time but this is no longer mentioned).

You can download the database is GDB format so you can check if the camera is included or not by checking in Mapsource without having to do a drive-by. Alternatively you can load the CSV files into MS Autoroute to do the same thing by using the Data import function.
