I've used my 2820 on a variety of bikes (1150GS, CBF1000, 1100GS, 990 Adv) and, other than the occasional re-booting when going over very bumpy ground issue, it works well
I've got one of these new fangled R1200Rs now (2012 vintage) and the dealer wired the power lead to the bike but to one of the powered connectors (as I understand it) so that it would turn off and on with the ignition. Fine so far. Worked ok last time I tried it.
However, today when I connected it, the GPS worked fine until I started the engine then the GPS cut out and wouldn't turn back on again. I used the GPS in the car later = fine. Tried it again later on the bike = works ok until the engine is turned over then it just switches off and won't switch back on. If I start the engine then fire up the GPS, fine.
Is this a case of the bike deciding that it needs to shut down to protect itself and/or the GPS because I'm starting the bike with the GPS already on? Seems unnecessarily nannyish if so (imho).
Also, even when the ignition is off, the GPS stays powered. Does the canbus leave the power to the auxiliary stuff in play for a certain amount of time before 'powering down'?
I've had a search on here, but not found anything specific. Before I start coming over all unnecessary, am I overlooking something obvious and/or is there an easy fix/workaround, ideally so that I can turn the GPS on at any time (ie before and after firing up the engine) without it cutting out?
