Eddy, the first thing you need to do is set your 2610 to "prompt" for calculation method before it works out a route. Yours sounds like it it's set to "Fastest" route. Did it give you the option of "Fastest" or "Shortest" when you re-calculated your route during your journey?
The other thing is it sounds like you were driving using the base map only on the 2610. You need to confirm that you have the mapping loaded and selected for use on the unit. I don't have a 2610 but try Settings/Map info to see if it's selected for use.
