Yes they can be used.

No easy to explain here, just get used to using Mapsource and read the manual and you'll pick it up :thumb

All night petrol stations in France

Having just nearly been caught short on a 2,000km in 24hr ride from Bari to Calais, how about manned 24hr petrol stations in France ? As soon as I am sorted out I will post the few I now know of....

Ian.

Hi
Does any one know if it is possible to add icons to MapSource & therefore Garmin units ?? It would be nice to be able to use the origional Pocket GPS World icons for the speed cameras & then not need the name to be shown inorder to mean anything.
Also would be nice to show POI's posted here with a meaningfull icon.

Thanks
Icarus

OK have answered my own question, upload .bmp files to Garmin as well as POI files.

Hi Iam new here and I need some advice. I tried to open the files for POI that you have posted but when I try to open them with Map Source I get this error

"The file cannot be read because it uses a subsequent file version.
This program can read MPS files as well as GDB files version 1.0 and below."

I use a Garmin Quest I and would like the BMW dealers in Germany / Austria in particular. Are you also able to supply the Formula 1 hotels in Europe as well?

Cheers

Thanks a lot all done and what a difference. I use my Quest a lot but wish there was an upgrade path to the Quest II as it has eveything onboard 2Gb memory does wonders.

What with the new GSA coming I cannot afford the 500 smakkeroos for the street price on the Quest II

Cheers keep the rubber side down.

As a lot of people have expressed an interest in WW2 sites in Europe I've found 118 :thumb

I've added 3 Netherlands (NL) museums. Haven't visited two of them, but I can recommend the Airborn Museum in Arnhem... Combined with a walk in the grounds (you can walk in the area between the hotel and the river where the troops maintained a perimeter), and a visit to the bridge... you get a good sense of The Longest Day...

Good Effort

I think making these POI files available is great. But following the process using the downloads from POIDownloads I would question the comprehensiveness of the data that's available. A good benchmark is "Local Authority Schools"; using POIDownloads for this category, the list only lists 3500 or so schools. Clearly there have to be more than 30,000 LEA schools in the UK.

Actually creating these files looks straightforward, so thanks to Whatton for sharing the method. I will follow links given and try a few things as well.

I noticed the 'proviso' on the POIDownload site which said (paraphrase) "For some businesses their geographical location will be taken as the centre of a post code area. Whilst in urban areas this will be pretty accurate, in rural areas this may not be the case". Probably explains why a bike business in the sticks may be a couple of miles out.

I personally would like to thank Whatton for giving enough clues as to how this is done. I'm interested in the methodology, so have learned something new - so a definite 'Thanks' for that. If you ever come across a 'red light area' list, it would probably go for a fortune (not that I would want to use one mind you. But as they say, "Sex is the internet's biggest seller".)

Many thanks.

How do you do this? I've been trying to figure it out for ages for LPG stations, not for the bike, clearly but for my 6x6. Refuelling is important at 12mpg!

Found a file on the net that has 800 of them. They all seem to be a little off the actual waypoint for the service station as per the Garmin standard POI file. But I suppose it'll give you an idea :thumb

Fantastic!

The various data bases out there are all a little off. for example they have a fuel station about 3 miles from my house that closed 20 years ago but not the one across the road that was selling petrol before there were cars!

As you say, it'll give me a basic idea. Brill. :thumb :beerjug: :bow
