does anyone who has had gear sensor faults know if a gs911 fault code reset is reqd once the repairs are done? or should the bike sort itself out once the sensor is changed (mine hasnt)

if so anyone near Norwich who owns a gs911 prepared to give me 10 mins of their time for a few quid/beer?

thanks

mark

No idea, but I've removed mine and put it back on (after a liberal soaking in WD40) and it all works fine.

Maybe just put it back together and try it???

However, I believe the replacement does need to be hooked up to the BMW machine. Something about calibrating or something. That is according to my local dealer anyway.

looks like i am heading to dealer, have had the thing apart and all looks fine, worst case if I do need a new one rather than a reset I was told its £160 fitted, new ones from ind suppliers are about £100/120 so seems reasonable I guess

It's a rotary encoder, common in many forms of control. I can't see why it needs a dealer to calibrate anything?

I am not an expert on this but....
I understand that the encoder is a simple rotary counting device. The position of the encoder needs to be linked to a particular gear position so it knows where it is so to speak as a starting point. It then knows how many counts it is between the various positions. I was told that until that happens the encoder won't know where it and then cannot tell if you are in gear or neutral.
Well that is how I think it works.
Now what the dealer does I don't know but I do believe what CW in Dorchester tell me. On the other hand if it were from the other large SW BMW dealer I may be less inclined to believe them.

If it was mine I would.........
Stick it in neutral. Disconnect battery. Drink tea. Reconnect battery.
That'll force the ECU to reset. Neutral is the obvious default position for the selector.

I changed mine on a 2007 GSA about a year ago. Disconnected the battery unbolted the old one, fitted the new one connected the battery & it all worked, no warning light & the gear indicator & neutral were fine.

Like I said I'm no expert on this. If it worked and what you have done does sound logical give it a go. If it doesn't work it will be just a simple job for a dealer to do.:beerjug:

thanks to all, it still wont play so its boooked in, i will try and find out what the score is ref resets or recalibration

Does anyone know what the output range of the gear indicator potentiometer (switch on the back of the gearbox) should be on a 2006 1200GS? Mine works and outputs varying resistance within a certain range but it might not be the range the computer is expecting, so I have no neutral or gear indication. I have tried soaking it in WD, etc but no go. It stopped working after a particularly heavy downpour so thinking it may have gained more resistance along the way. Would rather exhaust all avenues with the old one before I spend $235 on a new one.

if i remember rightly once the unit fails & loses its reference the new unit must be calibrated to bike.:thumb

I stand corrected steptoe, it wasn't the gear position sensor, old age must be setting in,whats my name again.:JB

sounds like what happened to me, have you pulled the plug off and cleaned the pins and socket? next option might be to see if a dealer can re calibrate the device, would be cheaper than new, might work

to finish this thread that I started, I ended up with a new sensor and still found it needed to be calibrated by the dealer (which included a test ride), so maybe some are lucky and some of us need the full works?

Hi,

I just had mine done last week after quite a few problems with it. Pulled the connectors off and spayed it in WD40 .. unfortunatly it didnt resolve the problem, (although a couple of years ago a similar action did) -

I have a Kliktronic in place and really need to know what gear I am in at all times. When cold it was fine but when warm it was either blank or lied about which gear it was in .. in gear when neutral light was up.

The part cost £139 and the total bill was £190, inc VAT, - Garage had to "borrow" a special Torx spanner to change the thing although no charge for this.

No re-setting required at all, did disconnect the battery though for safety sake prior to work commencing. fired it up after ..... perfect again. Plenty of electrical grease carefully placed around it to keep moisture at bay.

It is possible to get second hand units, these are very model year specific and there have been a number of changes, - Not sure that given the hassle and the short life span of this part that I would bother with a second here.

Sorry yes, what am i talking about, of course they all need calibrating.

I'll only be charging a small recalibrating fee of £25, i'll be calling all the previous customers first thing in the morning and getting them to return and pay straightaway.

:D

I changed the one on my K bike which uses the same type. No possibility of resetting anything even if I wanted to - it was plug & play.

It seems strange that the OP got all the way in to take it off and didn't fit a new one - if your resigned to go to the dealer you could at least have tried it with nothing to lose. If it did need calibrating, which it seems it doesn't, the dealer would do that from the diagnostic port anyway and you have already done the hard work for free.

the deelers will tell you anything to justify there charges, most of it utter crap,i dont beleave a word they say ,i think from salesmen to service managers its pre programmed into them at bmw school,if its still got a warrantee fine let them get on with it ,if not do it yourself or get an indipendant to crack on with it .:thumb

So I spent the money and bought a switch (had gone up to $280 now, btw), plugged it in and, of course, it made absolutely no difference. :eek

So where do I go now? How do I track it upstream?
