Video of my bike being used with both Gear Shift Assist and Cruise Control, a lot !

OK. I know i am potentially gong to open a can of worms here, but GSAP, I just don't get it. I ve got 2017 R1200 GS TE bought from new in July, supposedly with GSAP specced, but every time I try to use it is seems very harsh and clunky, and feels like you are having to force the lever to select the next gear, not very smooth at all, and can certainly do smoother gear changes with the clutch, but not quicker

I did read / see on some reviews that on new bikes the operation gets smoother with miles. But i'm up to 4,000 miles now, and only seems marginally better on the upshifts, but not at all on the downshifts. Definately doesn't auto blip on the down shift with throttle closed, at least not that I can perceive.

I am starting to wonder, a) Is it working properly, b) was it set up properly on pdi by the supplying dealer? Does it need some sort of enabling at dealer pdi, or is it factory set? c) Is it me, i'm not using it properly, or not used to it, or d) are my expectations of a smooth shift just to high?

Had problems with my 2017 gs at the beginning, up shift was fine but down shifting was difficult, mentioned it to service dept when i took it in for running in check, they reset it and its running fine now no problems.

I go on half-day to full day ride-outs every week, always through villages and towns.

Well, there you go then. I also go out for full days at the week-end, but I use routes to specifically AVOID going through villages and towns. And straight roads. Where's the fun riding through villages, towns? Unless you're looking for nice big, reflective shop windows, of course. :green gri

My throttle gets a good work-out, so no call for cruise control. :nenau

Its shit on the GS, strangely better on the 1200r and 1200rs, don't understand why but I've tried it on all 3 models and the GS is the worst.

I havent ridden a R1200R with it .... but I completey agree with you . Night and day difference between the R1200GS and the R1200RS.
Baffling because the engine/gearbox has the same specification. Ratios , everything identical.

I'd love to read an explanation.

PS If you are "speccing" your new R1200GS be aware its still worth purchasing it !

You are lucky your commute doesnt include the fekking A9 !
Cruise control helps me keep my license to ride!

The A9 has SPECS cameras all up it, I think?

Thankfully, I don't commute on the bike. Just a five mile suburbia crawl in the car. The bike's for leisure use only.

My throttle workout is opening and closing, roll-on, roll-off - rarely ever is it pinned wide open. Frankly, in an average speed camera zone, the car has an easy to set speed limiter, which is far more use than cruise control on a busy road.

I have a Golf with DSG gearbox and adaptive cruise control, so I set cruise control to the speed limit and just let the car follow the speed of the traffic :D It makes long journeys comparatively relaxing.

I did use the cruise control on my old RT TC, but it was pretty crude compared to car systems, so I've rarely missed it on my GS LC

I don't think I could ever have a bike without cruise control. Makes dual carriage ways and motorways a breeze.

I love my GSAP on my 2016 GSTE. I use it up/down (as low as 2nd gear... 1st is quite severe!). I must say that I use it more often than using the "classic clutch method".

Strangely mine is really smooth on up shifts when the bike and gearbox is cold and just setting off. No problems even going from 1-2
After a few minutes not so much and definitely not 1-2. Fine for 3-4-5-6 even with light to medium acceleration.
I find downshifts near perfect with absolute closed throttle and braking hard as you stamp through the gears to stop at the lights etc.

I had an extended load of an R9T Urban GS and I enjoyed being my own gear shift assist (not quite) pro again.

Mine is the same when cold. Makes me think a slightly thicker oil may be better.

Works great on my 17. Had it on S1r, better? Erm not really. Plus the S1 had strange feel thru the clutch lever on manual change.
Tbh I was suprised at the smooth gear change and lack of clunk compared to my 14. Either lucky as fcuk or they really are improved.

It works fine on mine - two things to remember:

1) On upshifts make sure you are accelerating (not neural throttle) before attempting to use it.

2) On downshifts make sure the throttle is fully closed.

That's it on mine - works perfectly, even at moderate acceleration.

Exactly. It was good on my 15 GS. There is a knack to it, but you can go from 1-6 if you get it right without clunking..

I had GSAP on my 65 reg bike and thought it was okay, but a bit agricultural. When I test rode a 17 reg bike I thought it was much better, so I traded up. Hardly ever use the clutch now.

Which would make a lot of sense in line with the revised gearbox on the Euro 4 models.

Then you got a gooden.

Mine has been checked at the service and is 'ok' but it has caused a knee problem as it's a strong flick to get it to engage.
