Hello .... the horrible noise in the gearbox  is getting me worried ....obvious to all and his dog when the bike is idling (cold or hot). Spectacular eruptions and lava flows are occuring ...it must be like a scene from Mount Etna in those casings...shovelfulls of iron filings grinding the gears ...it cant be right......small children are starting to point and freinds are avoiding our company .... well actually my freinds think its a source of f...ing mirth!!!

So what to be done....

The bike is a 94 r1100gs, only 28000 miles ( pausing for louder laughter in the background )...yep I know there (in)famous for it.

I plan to heave it out and get amoungst the rubble and debris that can only remain .. but .. need some good 'gen'...

1. Is a g/box strip straightforward ...do I need any special tools/pullers/presses/alignment gear da di da?

2. Can I modify the shitty taper bearings to a better spec?

3. whilst the bike is apart should I take the opportunity to look at other stuff ... Clutch .....drive shafts ??

4. Should I just swop it for a recon ... if so from where and at what cost?
...are all R11xx boxes alike?

and there was me... thinkin Be Em riding would be a near spanner-free zone!!

any help greatfully recived.

.....any one out there with a gearbox they want to sell???

Howard

Mine is a 94 & done 78,000 no problems so far but it is the later gearbox (after VIN number 311168 improved transmission fitted ) the later gearbox can be upgraded & you use sealed bearings
If it is the very early gearbox you will need to change the final drive if you fit the later gearbox as the ratio is different
clear as mud :rob

Mark cheers...its no starts .. 63673xx ..manufactured 05/94 as far as i can tell.

The parts bloke @ pidcocks was able to supply upgrade bearings to a bloke i know who did his , if you get a haynes manual all the settings are in it .
I am @ wigan on saturday afternoon (greenfields close hindley, wigan) as got some gt500 suzuki bits off ebay :D
The cheap option will be a bearing factors but use sealed bearings as the seals keep the bearings clean so metal particals dont get in the bearing :thumb
