Hi guys

Just bought a 2001 R1150GS and took the backend apart to lube all the splines. I wasn't happy at all when the gearbox came off. Not only I'm in need of a new clutch but also the input splines are pretty toast.

So I'm looking for a used fine looking shaft as buying a new one is my last option. I already asked Motorworks without any luck.

Are there any more options of finding a used one from the UK?

Best regards,

Jaak

Try Neil at the GSshop at the top of the page :thumb2

I've none spare - Good used input shafts are getting very hard to obtain.

Used the couple i did have in, and the last one i needed i ended up using a shaft from a complete RT gearbox i had.

Allright. Thank you very much for your responses.
That about wraps it up then and I'll have to order a new one. :blast

Best regards

Jaak

shafted

get a new one as they all go the same way a s/h one is possibly started to go so bite the bullet!

Dare I ask what new shafts go for (looked on Motorworks but they're not listed)?

I ask as the spare gearbox I bought for my 1100 has a pretty worn shaft so even if I wanted to use it, it'd probably need a new shaft  (that said, I don't know how worn splines have to be before they're considered unserviceable...)

A bit under 180 £

Is this just an alighnment issue or is it also with miles? From all the info on the forum i was under the impression that it was alignment mainly on the 1150's? My splines were fine when i had the g/box bearing prob fixed at 45k ish.

Alignment is important, but for some reason, 1150's shafts are more prone to failure than 1100's. 2000 or 2001 models. Dunno why.

Dan.

It's a strange issue. On 1150 models I've seen it all, worn out splines at 25K miles, and perfect original splines at 80K plus miles, and then worn out splines at 80K miles.
If it was an alignment issue i would assume the splines would have worn before reaching 80k miles ??

No rythme or reason...

Can anybody suggest the reason for the uneven wearing of the splines? The first quarter looks way better then the center. And the end is totally OK because clutch never reaches it.

Makes you wonder if its just of those production line issues and also seems to be more reported on 1150's. Gotta say the best alignment advice was to fit the clutch finger tight and turn the engine a couple of times to centre it, tighten via the starter cavity before torquing up.

I remember some of the K bikes were like this and it sort of puts you off all these alignment tools...

All fun:augie

The finger tight thing works on boxers but I am not so sure it works on k-bikes since they have the flywheel somewhere else.

This issue got bounced around on a couple of forums a few years back, it set off a spate of clutch spline lubing. One guy claimed he’d measured a slight alignment error in the gearbox bell housing that he believed had caused his input splines to wear out prematurely – Maybe he was right :nenau

Personally, I’d swap the complete gearbox and not bother trying to replacing the input shaft, it may not be a long term fix.

Hi Jaak,
Old one did 60k. "New" one has only done 3k because I've not used the GS much since September when it was fitted. Been hiding from the winter weather on my RT instead and the snow plus Christmas holidays meant I only rode into work twice in December.

Black "dust"

Hi

does this black "dust" on all of the non-moving parts look OK to you? :eek
