I've got an '05 1200GS with 13k miles . Coming home from a day out on Saturday the revs suddenly increased, I was in sixth gear at the time, it was as if the clutch was pulled in with no drive. Was going to stop but as I changed down to fifth everything appeared OK. I thought I had best have a check only to find that there was no drive in 6th, 4th , 3rd , or 2nd . First & 5th where the only two working.

Fortunately I was close to home & the roads were quiet so I rode home in 5th. The dealer's closed today but will contact them tomorrow , looks like it's going to need a new box / rebuild.

Exactly the same happened to me, going along at 80mph in sixth and lost all drive. Only had 1st and 5th.

Trouble was I was in Slovenia 900miles from home.

I flew home, the bike followed and needed a complete new box.

Subsequently sold.

snap (x3 on my old 04 bike)

It appears that quite a few 12GS were built with gearboxes made from bottletops.

Hope you get it all fixed quicjly. Be interested to hear the diagnoses

Gearbox Knackered - Update

BMW Assistance arranged recovery of the bike to the dealers this morning so I hope to hear their diagnosis soon.

The recovery guy seemed good. Can't remember the name of the company just now but he had a van modified for bike recovery. Had a a big folding ramp and then the front wheel was clamped & rear end tied down, hopefully no damage to the bike.

Will post when I hear from the dealer.

John

Update 2

Dealers have drained gearbox oil & found loads of swarf. They are not even going to try & repair it - they have ordered a replacement 'box.

Apparently this is the first gearbox they have replaced !.
