I did read in a recent bike magazine (eithe Bike or Ride), an article about GS's and some bigwig from BMW saying as far as he was aware all leaking gearbox seals had either been fixed under warranty or under goodwill arrangements. Might be worth trying to dig the article out.
Hi Ross
The info you want is in the Mar 2008 edition of Bike (latest one for the next week or so) page 49 under 'Engine'
Sorry don't have a scanner

Opens the flood gates cos you tell one and they tell two etc etc etcI can understand some of BMW's position, but I don't get why they won't commit to the covering the cost of the work if it turns out that the oil seal has failed as expected prior to me having the work done.

So I've been in touch with BMW and they say that gearbox oil seal failure is not a known issue on these bikes, they can't tell me what the expected life for the gearbox input oil seal shaft is and they can't commit to any goodwill until I've actually paid for the work to be done at a BMW dealer.
They won't even commit to helping with the cost of the repair if it turns out the oil seal was at fault.
It's odd that it's not a known problem but yet Steve Bellars (their UK dealer support manager) comments in this month's Bike on p.48 saying to say that all bikes with these problems should have been fixed under warranty or good will.
...and apparently there is no-one else at BMW beyond the customer service rep that I can deal with to escalate the issue.
I can understand some of BMW's position, but I don't get why they won't commit to the covering the cost of the work if it turns out that the oil seal has failed as expected prior to me having the work done.
And as for saying that they don't know how long the oil seal should be expected to last....odd that they'd fit such a part to their engines really.
So I guess I either do the work myself and forget BMW, or pay BMW up front and 'hope' that they'll provide good will after the work's been done.
Cheers, Ross.
Should we not have a thread on here dedicated to those 1200 owners who have suffered the engine/gearbox oil leak.
It would help those owners who's bikes are out of warranty (me) to prove to BMW that this is down to a faulty part and force their hand to honour the repair cost. I am planning to visit my dealer soon to argue that they (BMW) should foot the bill. Mine has covered 12,000 miles and has been leaking for about 3,000. However, it doesn't seem to have got any worse and doesn't leak so much to cause a drip.
It would be interesting to see just how many 1200's have had the repair or are experiencing the leak,
