Hi All,
Is there any detriment to adding an additive to the gearbox & final drive oil ?

I ask because it was recomended to add it to the final drive oil of the V-Max I used to own, to cut down on wear.
I have some STP Gearbox oil Additive that I thought I may add, although the label states it is not suitable for slip differentials or overdives.

Can anyone advise ?

Kind regards

My advice is to run away from additives for transmission and/or engine.

Most miracle additives (20% les friction, no wear, etc...) don't do anything except taking money from you.

Gearboxes oil have enough additives and quite agressive additves (EP additives are quite agressive espacially at high temp). Don't add ! And maybe you can fall on a additive which could react badly with the additves of the transmission oil.

So, that's the advice of a application engineer/technical consultant working for the world leader in ball and roller bearings.

Thanks

Cheers 4 the advice, I will heed your warnings and add no additives.

Use Motorkote it doesn't mix with the oil so it doesn't change any of the oils specifications it just bonds to the metal surface providing a thin protective coat. It reduces friction, noise, temperature and fuel consumption.
I used it on my 1550 as an engine additive and I am amazed by the results.

Another pitch:augie Luckily I only have an 1100:thumb

Re Steptoe's earlier reply - utter bollox!!

Absolute nonsense. Please explain how it bonds to metal surfaces and to which metals? How does it reduce friction? Pure fantasy with these additives. Steptoe is far more subtle than I would be. Total and complete unproven double load of bollox

Oooh, back again....

Just searched through my Yorkshire equivalent to Google which is "Oggle".

It came up with "usual marketin shite whiowt an apeth o proof"...:D

It may be that it's the veritable Holy Grail or it may just be another product for the paranoid like all the others.

It helps if you have evidence of your own to show or you just look like you are easily "sold" to...:D

Lots of slick marketing , the addative can actually do harm with conventionl roller or ball bearing, the bearings have a very small contact patch with there parent metal they reley on some friction to rotate the ball /roller If the surface has this super slippy addative the rollers/balls dont turn resulting in very increased bearing wear, so you will soon need a new diff/ gearbox.
Rather change the oil more often

Snake oil! Best you can do is use the recomended grade of oil and change it regularly! If addatives made your bike that much better don't you think the manufacturer would use them from new!
