Help!

My '08 GS is currently at SBW Motorrad in Hertford for an annual service. They've just called to say that there is a gearbox oil leak from the input shaft. They've advised that the oil seal on the shaft needs replacing and that as there is a minor clutch slip, they would have to replace the clutch too. Cost around £1,100 + vat. (Aparrently with the seal replacement, the clutch would need to be replaced anyway.)

It is out of warranty but it has only done 9 100 miles and has always been dealer serviced. I've had problems with my elbow and so haven't ridden the bike since last November but took it out around 4 weeekends ago for 30 or so miles. I felt no clutch slip and noticed no oil. (Recent surgery puts me a good 6 weeks away from riding again).

As the mileage is low and has been dealer serviced, SBW have asked BMW for a goodwill claim and BMW have offered 50% of the cost of the parts only. SBW are trying to get authorisation for a full claim have gone back to BMW. We await their response.

Any advice on the following (or generally) would be most welcome:

1.) Given the mileage, should I try to push BMW to cover the entire claim on a goodwill basis? If so, how do I go about this, who do I contact, etc?

2.) Is there any other way of bringing the cost down? I would tend to go to my local independant BMW guy (Motoscot) for something like this but I don't imagine the discounted parts offer would apply?

Any help or advice greatfully received.

Did they say how they identified the leak?

My 2008 GSA clutch is slipping sometimes in 5th at only 12,000 miles. If not due to oil, the dealer wants £900 for a clutch change.

BMW will have no doubt written to you when your manufacturer's warranty expired offering you a chance to take up the extended warranty.
Judging by your post this option hasn't been taken up.This would have been more than likely covered by the warranty.
Irrespective of the mileage & service history they've offered you a solution. This obviously would require a contribution from yourself giving you a warranty of sorts on the total repair as in 2 year warranty on the parts fitted.
This wouldn't be offered if you decide to get an independant to do the repair.

As above, leave it with the BMW dealer....................they are best placed to help you:thumb
They have achieved 50% on parts and are pushing for more help from BMW, so where's the problem
They are more help, than seeking advice here perhaps

Thanks for the input.

Strange as it may seem, BMW did not write to me - probably because I bough the bike privately. I did advise them though. I would have leaped at the opportunity to take an extended warranty.

Would you happen to know if there are any warranties available that I could buy now? (Warranties that are worth anything, that is).

A fine mist of oil under the bike. They recon around £1,100 + VAT for the whole job.

You can buy an extended warranty via BMW or their dealers but in this case it wouldn't cover your existing fault as that as happened already.
You are tied into having your bike serviced at a BMW dealer as its an insurance based warranty.
Thats why you didn't receive an invitation to purchase said warranty as you bought the bike privately

I think you should take the 50% offer and be done with it. It is very generous.

Alternatively, get a quote from an independant i.e. Steptoe?

To replace the entire clutch would cost around £300 in parts. To replace the friction plate only (and degrease the rest) would cost about £60. The input seal is probably a few quid plus a bit of tape around the splines and two self tappers to pull the old seal from its housing.

The expensive bit would be the labour to strip the gearbox out and gain access to the clutch.

The good news is that SBW Motorrad has persuaded BMW to pick up 50% of the parts and, wait for it, 100% of the labour! This has restored my faith in BMW and the dealers.

Public thanks to both BMW and SBW Motorrad in Hertford.

That is a great result when you consider that you were not the original owner and that you bought the bike privately. Goodwill normally only covers the orginal owner and ceases to come into effect once the bike changes hands :hide

I had the crown wheel bearing replaced 6 months out of warranty - BMW paid 100% under goodwill and I'm second owner, bought privately.

Wait! I take that back - SBW has just called to say they made a mistake and that BMW had not offered to pay 50% of the parts and 100% of the labour. They misread an email and gave me the wrong info. Trouble is that I told them to go ahead based on the original info and I can't afford the full cost.

SBW tell me that BMW have changed their goodwill claim system and a new system comes into force today. They will try applying via the new system.
