Gearbox oil

They all have g box oil level plugs ? how can you get the wrong amount?? You pour oil in untill its up to the fill hole.
If I remember correctly my 1150 was 1 litre for the gearbox cos I had to buy two bottles to do a final drive oil change as well.
Why would put in less than up to the correct level?:nenau

Exactly, you could only overfill if you laid the bike on its left side ( gs1150 ) and topped the box up.
Cheers gent's

My info is taken from the manual.

According to it I'm neither under nor overfilling 800ml for service 1 litre for rebuild.

It will take a litre on a service don't get me wrong, I used to do it, not anymore, not since the balls around I had last year with an output seal

Are you intentionally under filling your gearbox incase a seal leaks? Really?

Funnily enough my fkn outputs shaft seal went last year, needless to say I now stick to the correct text book levels and have had no issues thus far.

I'm not saying overfilling caused it but it couldn't of helped.

The correct text book levels is bottom threads on the fill hole, regardless of how much oil is required.

It's normal practice for virtually all gearboxes to have a fill & level plug.

Anyone who needs a torque wrench to get the fill and drain plugs in correctly needs to assess why they are doing a DIY oil change. I mean do we need a torque wrench to fit the engine oil filler cap?

Just how would you even be able to fill further than the bottom threads...I use a bottle. 800 gear box, spills and rest in FD. As per manual, the same viscosity IIRC

It's an 1150

So no I'm not under filling

Please note info in this post is for an 1150

OK here's a snap of my manual Kenny.

It's a bit like I'll show you mine if you show me yours 😊

As stated earlier:

0.8l or 800ml for a service
1l for a rebuild

I'd be interested to know the manual your info came from Kenny, if it's available.

Thanks

Hutchy whilst at Hurst's spannering the foreman instructed me gearbox to lower threads and same with FD

He's been doing this over 30 years now

You can't overfill a box in the 1100 1150 1200 boxers if it's filled to the filler plug level There's gearbox breathers fitted to them
More importantly only the incorrect grade of oil will screw up the box or FD

Maybe they feel that as there is a crush washer used, they would like to use the correct torque value?

I always think it's good practice to torque the drain plugs up correctly. I do plenty of stuff to the bike without any disasters so I can't be that daft.

a "guide" for torque is to screw in the plug or item

Just Until you need to apply pressure to the spanner or allen key then tighten an Eighth of a turn more

That's it, no More than that, especially into Alloy

My manual says bottom of the threads on fill hole. If you are not filling to that level then you ARE under filling. It's a physical level not a specified amount.

Which manual ?

And, from the BMW 1150 Reprom,
Capacity l (Imp.pint/
US quart)
approx. 1.0 (1.76/1.06)

Well I'm lost

So either my manual is wrong or they all are, on that note fk it

I'll fill it with as per the manual if it blows I'll let you know 😊

Ps thats not my manual thats yours Kenny and the advice from others on here.

But that said if it damages it I will find you and I will loosen your brake caliper bolts 😨

Apart from buying a large enough supply, I really don't care about the capacity numbers. And frankly I've much the same attitude with engine oil. Fill to the level mark and it's done. The engine oil is a floor level grovel with a torch but simple enough. The gearbox is easy access and silly easy to do.

Park the bike level and fill the gearbox until oil runs out of the filling hole. A pedant would let it dribble until it stop but as long as oil isn't flowing out its not over-filled. Replace the plug and it's done. Simples.

If you have enough left over to do the FD with 200ml then go ahead. If not, buy some more oil. It's cheaper than under filling either gearbox.

I use 75-140 in both gearboxes. It exceeds the original spec and has not affected the mpg (fluid drag must be much the same as the thinner stuff).
