gearbox to swingarm gaiter

My 05 drive shaft has gone pop, all the needle bearings from the gearbox end uj were inside the swing arm rolling around, anyways the gaiter is split and I have tried to change it for a new one with the swing arm in place, I have just spent 3 hours trying and failed,
it looks like the swing arm has to come out to install the new one correctly unless any one has a cunning method ???:nenau

:blast:blastyou could have removed and refitted the arm in less than an hour.
use plenty of wd40 on the l/h pivot before attempting to remove it.if the thread picks up on the way out you will have a whole load of hassle.have a good look at the pivot bearings while it is apart and consider replacing them at the same time.:thumb
 
I found that glueing the gaiter to the swing arm was the only way to stop it popping off whilst fitting shaft/gaiter to the gearbox. (There's even less room on the HP2!)
 
Heat on left side swingarm pivot pin and shock lower bolt! about 100 degrees

there's lots of threadlock sort of baked on them (from the factory)
 
Swing arm bearings need a special tool to tighten/adjust taper rollers. Laser sells one for about a tenner, a slotted hollow socket with Allen key, or you could make your own.

It fits without removing the swingarm.

Obviously you have to let the final drive swing down so you can pop the driveshaft back out of the way :D
 
Motorworks sell a rubber gaiter with slightly more generous dimensions making it a little easier to replace.

Paul, thanks for your helpful advice, but you're talking about an airhead gaiter.

This is the 1200 model were talking about. :D

I have tried, but there is a plastic ring that holds the gaiter to the swing arm and to get that to locate in the arm and hold the gaiter properly is well difficult, impossible for me in fact, believe me I've tried, the ring is getting distorted and I don't want to damage it at 40 quid a pop.it will

On the drive shaft front, I can have it rebuilt by a local propshaft firm for £150 or a 2nd hand one from ebay for £85.

Im a little miffed about the cost of £150,yeah it would be as new but I feel they are taking the piss, so I've gone for the 2nd hand one at £85 with a back up from Patzx12:thumby:
 
I had the same problem so took the swinging arm out to take a look. On close inspection, it was the plastic ring with clips which had deformed over time that were preventing the gaiter being able to clip crisply into the swinging arm aperture. A new gaiter went in nicely and the clips located in the grove so it doesn't pop out anymore. Fiddly though with the s/a in place. I did find I needed new s/a bearings and they had only done 28k.

Quite frankly I think it;'s better to get the swingarm out

Not because of being a twat but sometime in the future they are going to have to come apart and quite frankly I'd rather do it at low miles grease it properly and seal anything that needs sealing

Quite frankly the swingarm pivot bolts are a crap design enhanced by the exposure to salt and schite thru the winter months etc etc (includes 1100 and 1150's alloy on alloy faces and no sealing or Grease)

When I had a look at Boirche's bike last year the swingarm bearings were full of rust and gave way before the pin would come out of the centre of them

So as a better engineering practice Especially if you are keeping the bike Remove it clean the threads Grease the bearings and wotsits and fit it back on with thread lock where required and as specs suggest! i.e. 2 drops of medium strength not the whole bottle of high strength for one pin ! :blast

the swing arm bearings on the 1200 are possibly the worst design i have ever seen,i stripped an 8 month old bike recently for spares and the pivots were already starting to seize into the bearings.:blast
in the interests of forum spirit i have the tap needed to clean the threads in the frame if you are unlucky enough to have one "pick up" on removal.
it goes without saying that if you "break it youve bought it".
and a contribution to replace it when it wears out would be appreciated.:thumby:

Took the swing arm out today and changed the gaiter, I really can't see anybody doing it properly any other way, the swing arm came out easy no seized bolts / threads etc, bearings don't look to clever (85k) but I didn't have any to hand so just cleaned them out and regreased them for now, Swing arm bolts only do up with 7 and 9 nm and my torque wrench only go's down to 10nm so that's what they are now lol.

inner race of bearings look a bitch to get out though, very little lip to get behind to knock out but that's a job for winter I reckon.:thumby:
 
all back together and working great, I don't really spend a lot of time looking after the bike and it's showing, the old girl's getting worn out now, worrying rattle coming from gearbox, it stops when the clutch is pulled in, seems to coming from the output shaft side, maybe the fucked uj on the driveshaft damaged the box or the gearbox is just worn out, I have a spare box just hope it lasts to the winter when I plan on a major overhaul at xmas:clap
