Gedinne - Classic road racing

The very good showers…

Three days for EUR 40 is…. Um…… Er….. a smidge over EUR 13 a day. Good value, I think.
is there practise etc before the friday? As in anything to see (ala IOM TT practise week?) I dont think I can be there longer than the Friday

Apparently my presence is possibly required in Bouchain which is a couple of hours away but if that’s the case I’ll almost certainly be off on either Saturday or Sunday would probably pop over for a day with sleeping in the car an option.

The issue is that we’ve not been busy this year which along with other factors could impact my employment prospects after my official retirement date next March so I’m trying to be a good employee by helping out when needed at short notice. I received an email this morning asking if I would be willing to help if requested. That’s code for “you’d better say yes”.

do a @Wapping and use the tunnel. Stay in St Omer at the Ibis Budget. Eat flame cooked meat in De Drie Kalders

I looked and it’s no easier to use the tunnel plus being a bank holiday weekend it’ll be busy coming home on the Monday.

I’ve had a word with Eddie and if he sneaks it past his social secretary the tentative plan is to get the Thursday 9am crossing from Harwich. That’d mean leaving at about midnight beers then a power nap on the ferry, drive to Gedinne and get there before dark.

Monday night ferry and home around lunchtime.

Unfortunately, I now have a diary clash, which means I won’t be able to go.

If anyone is thinking of going and hasn’t been, I can definitely recommend it. The racing is good, the class pistes rotate quickly enough, so there’s little delay between races. The paddock is open (for a nominal charge) so plenty to look at. All very friendly / relaxed.

I’ve contacted the campsite in town to see if they have availability because it’ll force me to watch from different places and I won’t have to listen to Plastic Bertrand at 7am.

Anyone else thinking of going?

As said earlier, I’ll be stopping at the campsite in the town because I fancy a bit of a change and this will force me to expand my horizons somewhat but I expect we’ll walk up to the paddock if only to buy the obligatory T shirt.

The racing is good, the viewing areas near the paddock are good, there are plenty of places to get food and booze and it’s not really a long drive from either Calais or the Hook.

Today’s tip is if you go and stop opposite the paddock take a pair of binoculars so you can watch the bikes going up the hill on the opposite side of the paddock. It looks straight but it isn’t :D

I didn't realise there were so many road type races abroad...

It is very popular, as a class. For all the UK’s much vaunted love of motorsports, we have always proved most reluctant to have road circuits or, just about, any form of serious endurance racing.

You know yourself that there are still a lot of British riders competing in classic racing and there used to be a lot more until regulatory matters made it too awkward and time consuming.

Indeed, a decent percentage of the riders are British, trundling over in their Transit vans and caravans, with a genuine enthusiasm to race competitively or, thankfully, just be prepared to take part. No matter what speed, it still requires a degree of nerve to ride a bike or sidecar on road circuits, lacking the safety measures of a modern track. To do it as a strictly amateur, whilst paying an entry fee to participate, for others to enjoy, is generous of them.

Correct circuit this time
And a good hair-pin vantage point you have

Hopefully at the end of a decent approach so you can hear the bikes 'on-song' as they approach. (I'm googling circuit layout now) edit no googling at work all sites prohibited by Pooter Police.........

We ended up walking about 6 miles today walking from the camp site then round different parts of the track but it was good. Only practice and qualifying today but we had over 12hrs away from the camper and had our first beer as we walked away and our last one in the pizzeria 15 minutes ago. We do it so you don’t need to :beerjug:
