Hi all . I have just returned to the airhead fold after an absence of a couple of years, just couldn't keep away. I have bought a bike from Germany , a 1992 R100 GS and am now looking to register it . I have the MOT booked this Saturday and have started to look at the DVLA form. As the bike is more than 10 years old DVLA have confirmed that I don't need type approval , however the application form V55/5 asks for a lot of information that would appear on the type approval document - if I am entitled to write exempt for type approval do I need to complete the rest of the questions ?

If I do does anyone know -

the Power Weight ratio ( kW/kg) ?

max net power (kW) ?

The bike has a digital speedo fitted which currently reads KM/H it dosn't look like it can be converted to mph , have someone working on the translation of the instruction manual . A cheap solution to an mph speedo would appear to be a bicycle computer - anyone see any reason why this wouldn't be ok ?

thanks for any help , will be back with more questions once the bikes on the road

I just filled in what I could, made sure I took all the paper work I had for the bike including the owners handbook,

You don't have to change the speedo, that is ,unless you want to.

I found the DVLA very helpful, they are not trying to catch you out, they just want your money :)

Good luck

Graham

You`ll need acceptable proof of the bike`s age in order to achieve the exemption.
This can be via the manufacturer or a DVLA approved person/organisation.
Unless it`s on any German documentation you possess.

Have a look at my Guzzi NTX saga for enlightenment.

It won`t be accepted by simply writing 'exempt' on the form unless you have the proof of age.

All the info is in the free DVLA Vehicle Import Pack and the approved age verifiers are on their website.

Electronic bicycle type speedo is acceptable.

Why not look at the Trailtech, Vapor speedo. I have on on my Bertha, simple to fix and gives you a speedo, rev counter, trip, time and even a temperature gauge, illuminated too.

If I remember correctly it was about £80.

I was forgetting the dating certificate,

Why not give Brian Price a call he handles the DVLA, for the BMW Club and will get you a dating certificate from BMW

01792862152, [email protected]

If you are not in the club, you could join it's only £25 and you get the dating certificate free, can't be bad,

But just give him a call and ask the question

Cheers Graham

Thanks for all the help guys , I have the Fahrzeugbrief which shows the date of registration as 1992 so hoping that will be ok , I also have the TUV certificate . Got the MOT this morning so will fill in the form as best I can and send it off .
Once registered there's a few mods that I plan to do so will be back with more questions .

By the way Tarka lovely bike , I also recall that Guzzi made a 750 as well
