Here is a ride report of my summer holidays to Germany and Austria in June/July, 2005.
This was my first European trip on my GS. We travelled down to Newcastle on the A68/A696 for the overnight ferry. There was a Bike Meet at Assen (sic) so we were soon joined a the terminal by literally dozens of sports bikes. The following morning, we docked at iJmuiden and set off for the 6 hour ride through Holland and Germany to stop off at my parents house in Jockgrim/Pfalz for a few days. During our stop off there, we had a ride up into the Pfalzerwald and stopped off at Johanniskreuz. There were a few bikes en route but not as many as I expected. Apparently at weekends, the road is swarming with bikes. No wonder, the road between Annweiller/Johanniskreuz and return via St Martin is superb.

This pic was taken at Johanniskreuz
We then headed into Schwartzwald en route to out pre-booked B and B at Stanzach, Lechtal, Austria. Our journey took us over the Schwartzwald Hochstrasse, into Freudenstadt. Great road surfaces and spectacular views and villages.
Here is Christine in Schwartzwald
We then headed south using part Autobahn to get some miles in and then did the last part using country roads to get from Allgau into Austria.
This is our B and B at Stanzach. The owners have secure bike parking and the accomodation and the food/service are first class. All for 21 euros per night too. Can't be bad...
Our first full day in Austria (Friday) was a bit disappointing as it was pouring with rain. We had a change of plan due to the weather. This was the first day of the BMW Meet at Garmisch so we headed over there (instead of the Saturday as we'd planned) thinking that at least we would be part sheltered as we took in all the stalls and bier tent. By the time we'd reached Garmish, the sun was out so we struck lucky despite the disappointing start to the day.
Here is a shot en route to the aforesaid Meet...
I should have mentioned that our first few days in Germany were in the mid 30's and this necessitated in kitting Christine out in "cooler" biker clothing. Many thanks to Klaus Meyer, BMW Motorrrad, Landau (excllent service) and also Bank of Scotland Visa (groan!)
I was a disappointed at not being able to meet up with Judge and Johnny Boxer's crew on the Saturday as we'd arranged. Ah well, some other time maybe...The BMW Meet was incredibly profesionally put together. it was unlike any other Biker Meet I've attended...REAL cutlery with the meals and quality wooden floors in the Bier Tent! A wee bit too "upper crust" for my liking but we only stayed until late afternoon so it might have livened up later...
The following day was Nirvana for me. We left Stanzach and rode over Hantennjoch into Imst and then headed over Timmelsjoch for lunch in Moos, Italy. How cool does that sound...? The route was breathtaking and an experience that I'll never forget. It was my first experience of an serious Alpine pass and one that I will definately be repeating asap!
Here is a pic or 2 of Timmelsjoch. Sorry if these are repeated from my earlier posts...
I was in text contact with Alte Wolf during my holidays and our hopeful meet and bier or three did not materialise. However, I know how much he enjoyed the Timmelsjoch route as well.
The return journey was equally exillarating and in truth, was so good that all my other "wee tours" thereafter paled into significance.
The stay at Stanzach was great and the area is really special.
The journey back to Jockgrim took us through the Allgau, passing Fussen and Neuswanstein castle. Great B class roads until the Autobahn at Stuttgart.
We spet the remainder of the holiday touring about the Duetscher Wienstrasse and Rheinpfalz areas. All in all a trully brillaint holiday and trip and Chrisitne, who isn't the greatest bike fan in the world enjoyed it so much that she's talking about our next Euro bike trip!
Here are some pics from the second week in Rheinpfalz:-
Hope this wee report gives you some small glimpse of what, for us was a very, very special holiday. I hope it's not been too boring ...
Cheers
