I'd only need to see a mechanic not use a torque wrench on critical fastenings once before he wouldn't work on my machine again.
 
Having used many a torque wrench over the years, even they are not as accurate as you might think. I once had a brand new one shear off head bolts because I put my faith in the wrench and not the ‘feel’ of years of experience.

You could have put a torque wrench on them to check. Not really understanding your logic but it's BMW you will need to convince if you have an issue and want them to pay for it

I can tell you that I replaced the tyres front and back that day. As you may know, to get the front wheel out you have to remove the front callipers, which I did and fitted the tyres and replaced the wheel and all the parts. I am a very competent mechanic and always double and triple check my work and would never ride a bike I thought to be dangerous, and in my 24 years of riding have never made a mistake with my mechanics, because I always triple check out lid verbally to myself. yes. I did replace the brake pads. With pads from BMW Park Lane. Genuine parts as always. However I did not remove the calliper as you do not need to. This that for their own pads will know this.
I simply took out the old ones and replaced them with the new as I’ve done many times before on this bike. Never had a problem. Ever. The pins are still in place after the accident, so I truly believe it’s nothing I’ve done.
I also rode 25 miles across London before this happened.
The bike is now at Vines BMW Guildford. BMW’s head technician came down personally to inspect the bike on Friday.
I am awaiting the results and hope to have news tomorrow when they open again after the bank holiday.
I feel incredibly lucky as this could have ended a lot worse than it did. Whether hats dude to skill and luck or just luck I don’t care. I’m just happy to still be breathing and walk away with some bad bruises rather than any broken bones.

I believe this is all resolved now, through insurance. BMW accepted no responsibility.

Just a couple of days ago, another GSER suffered a similar incident on the M5, though his wheel stayed intact long enough to come to a halt thankfully. So thats at least three of us who's rear calliper has come loose!

Check your calliper bolts folks !!

Cheers for the update, but was to be expected given he took a wrench to his steed.
 
A growing problem possibly, Lifted from UKGSER facebook page;


"Another one !!!

Hi Chaps a while ago there was an incident of a spoked wheel collapsing on a 1200gs, it was a video he was being filmed from behind by his friend. I think it was determined that the brake caliper had come off and went through the wheel. Today on our return trip from Land’s End my friend suffered the same fate on his 65 plate Gs the whole caliper assembly including mounting bracket broke off at 70mph on the M5 he had not touched it, it was last serviced at BMW. Looks like casting failure. Be warned!!! he is sending me pictures tonight. He is lucky to be alive!"

As appears in the picture of the original incident it seems the caliper carrier casting may be failing rather than bolts coming loose ?

Holy batman that is really scary, more investigation needed, thunderbirds are go.

 
When does this go viral? Do we panic now or shall I wait a while?
