My bike is a 2016 ex BMW off road school bike. I bought it Jan 2017 with 3000 miles its now done 24000, it had a "rip off" 2nd service at may 2017 at local BMW dealer, since then I've looked after it myself and the rear caliper has never been off by me???? Yes the only things missing were the caliper bolts all threads an mountings are ok!!?? It was 100% bolts came out with caliper falling into rear wheel spokes. I am a fully qualified motorcycle mechanic with over 45 years in the trade !!!!!! This is going to kill someone soon!!!???

Have you ever removed the caliper ?

Wow now this is getting serious, it seems to be happening quite often, I bet BMW never put in new bolts at the service, where new bolts written on your service invoice, if they actually do that.

Like I stated in my last post, I have never had the bolts out there is no need to!!

And that stops you inadvertently resting your boot on the brake pedal, allowing heat transfer? This could have been days, or even weeks before....
I remember speaking with a Locktite rep years ago. He said it does not take much heat to soften medium strength blue Locktite. Not even enough to blister normal paint.

Not sure the Loctite rep knew his stuff, according to Loctite the medium strength blue is good up to 343 degrees Celsius. At this temperature the aluminium would be starting to soften as would steel, I don’t think a brake calliper would get that hot, as the paint would blister and burn as an indication.

To be fair the bolts are 8.8 strength, so these should be more than adequate to be used multiple times without a drop in performance, especially as they are only torqued to 24NM.

I find it bizarre that so many are suffering the same issue. When you think about it, it is the same set up on nearly all motorcycles, that being aluminium carrier, aluminium swing arm/casing and 8.8 bolts and none of these bikes have the issue.

I’m more comfortable now , cos this sort of chat feeds my paranoia . Cost me a fiver for a special tube on eBay .
I’d like to know how you wire these round head bolts ?

Place your bets on when BMW are going to do a recall ;)

Fiver is cheaper than a life, anychance of a link to that product, was thinking of using a paint marker pen.

A tiny tin of airfix paint will do the job, but thats better than marker pen because you'll see the crack in the blob of paint.

All our front brake levers at work (on the RT's) have a blob of yellow paint on the hinge bolt after one lad lost his lever and didn't know until he went to use it on a sharp bend !!!! (You couldn't make it up .. ).

Your wifes nail varnish will do ...... no seriously .... !

If you are that paranoid I'll send you a paintmarker ......... it means fuckall if you don't inspect it on a pre ride checklist.

How often do we look at our brake calipers, I bet hardly ever for most, I included, so that blob of paint might just help to remember must look to check, and if blob not cracked, all good it would seem.
