This is in danger of getting to the point where some of the little snowflakes are scared to get on their bikes :D

....quick let's all buy a Honda (or KTM)!! :P

Don't buy a Honda VFR1200 as my front brakes locked on at 70'ish-mph in the outside lane of the M6 bringing me to a dead stop. Luckily I had moments to swing it onto the hard shoulder.

Front calipers were sticking on (from Winter Salt buildup), causing heat and friction binding.

Same happened to my mate on his VFR1200 a few weeks later.

My bike was brand new

Jesus I've never checked any of my bikes to this extreme,if a bike can't go from 1 yearly service to another without a major catastrophe it's time to call it a day !
 
Dunno, but guess you drill a couple of holes through the head - do a Google search and you will see plenty of pics.

Well thats a non starter ; drilling holes in BMW bolts ( it’ll weaken them ) , or fitting someone
else’s bolts will give give BMW the perfect excuse to decline any responsibility . I therefore cannot see how anyone can argue ‘wiring of the bolts’. (It wasn’t you btw )
 
24Nm is little torque ( respectively) and IF I hadn’t seen the spec and IF I hadn’t used a torque wrench ; I would most certainly give those bolts more welly : you know what the result could be . I’ll bet that many of those rear calipers are over torqued by someone and I’d like to see the results of thread examinations in those failure cases , which nobody has yet posted .

Valid point there, hence use once only bolts.

Yeah funny that and they are all so quick to blame the manufacturer. You even have complete idiots taking the one use only bolts off just to check them?!?!?!?!?!

....and applying copperslip to caliper bolts :rolleyes: Which will then also assist in overtightening, even with a torque wrench.

I guess they all know better than BMW but are usually the ones whinging about faulty parts when they fuck it up themselves.
 
I’ve just seen a retired motor mechanic and showed him the Youtube , “ I have never seen a caliper come off in my entire working life , our problem was always the opposite i.e getting them off ! I’ve also never used thread lock on caliper bolts !” Thats from a car mechanic .
Assuming that the mounting has not failed , somebody has done something very wrong ; either under torqued or the opposite ; massively over torqued and damaged the threads ??????
 
Well rule of thumb for me is little Nm use the 3/8 wrench and higher Nm use the 1/2 wrench it is far to easy to over torque with that big 1/2 wrench
 
I was just looking at the pictures again, and somethings missing.

Where's the rear Mud Guard? All the mounting points have no bolts, and the mud guard is completely missing?

Why?

The missing mudguard may not be relevant; as you know , many hate the thing and remove it as soon as possible .
 
The bolts don’t concern me ; they are steel, very strong and used at very low torques so that re use of - also wouldn’t concern me .
What is the mounting point and it’s female threads made off ; is it the same soft alloy casting as the rear diff housing ? Is it steel welded onto the diff housing ?Anybody know ?
 
If it was an earlier bike,

the cow catcher has one caliper bolt pass through its mounting bracket,

if that was removed and the bolt fitted it could potentially touch the disc..

But the 2017 models mount into the diff casing direct - so thats not the cause
