Yes if you don’t qualify automatically under any scheme for citizenship it can be a bit difficult. Careful. If you commit a crime in Ireland you MUST be brought before a judge if you are to go to jail. If on the other hand you fall fowl of immigration law the immigration official (Guard) can sign a committal warrant and send you straight to jail. We don’t have a separate custody system for illegal immigrants so they end up in the general prison population. Not very nice for someone who may or may not be uncomplyant with immigration. I’ve seen mistakes happen. JJH
